Biography

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Princess Ruto

The Sage of Water is a member of the Six Sages. Whenever the Sacred Realm is threatened, it sends out a call to awaken new Sages, including a Sage of Water.[5] In the Era of Chaos, an ancient Sage of Water worked alongside the other Sages to create the Temple of Time.[6] After Link is released from his seal in the Chamber of Sages, the Sage of Light Rauru tasks him with awakening the rest of the Sages.[7]

Inside the Ice Cavern, Sheik informs Link that Princess Ruto has gone to the Water Temple.[8] At the Water Temple, Link will find Ruto, who recognizes him and asks for his help saving Zora's Domain.[9] She offers to guide him to the locations within the Temple where he can change the Water level, at which point she swims away.[10] However, she vanishes thereafter.

Ruto awakening as the Sage of Water

After Link defeats Morpha, Princess Ruto will appear before him in the Chamber of Sages. She claims that Link's actions have saved Zora's Domain, and she wants to offer him her eternal love as a reward.[11] She cannot, though, as she reveals she has awakened and the Sage of Water and must guard the Water Temple as a result.[12] She encourages Link to continue his search for Princess Zelda, claiming that she can sense she is still alive.[13] Ruto then gives Link the Water Medallion, which lends her power to him.[14][15] Before he leaves, Ruto asks Link to thank Sheik on her behalf.[16]

Using her power as a Sage, Princess Ruto is able to help the other Sages construct the Rainbow Bridge, which allows Link to enter Ganon's Castle.[17] Princess Ruto appears in the Water Room after Link destroys the Water Barrier, where she urges him to hurry.[18] After Link defeats Ganon, the Sages combine their powers to seal him away in the Dark World.[19] Princess Ruto can be seen during the Credits, where she overlooks Hyrule from Death Mountain, alongside Saria, Darunia, Nabooru, and Impa. While doing so, Princess Ruto shares a look with Nabooru.

Twilight Princess

Alongside the other Six Sages, the Sage of Water was tasked by the Golden Goddesses to watch over the Mirror of Twilight.[20] The Sage of Water was present at the Failed Execution of Ganondorf in the Mirror Chamber. They attempted to execute Ganondorf using the Dusk Claymore, but he was able to call on the Triforce of Power and killed the Sage of Water instead.[21] Ganondorf was consequentially banished to the Twilight Realm. Afterwards, the remaining Sages can be seen mourning the Sage of Water.

Tears of the Kingdom

The Sage of Water was one of the Six Sages who fought alongside the first King of Hyrule, Rauru, during the Imprisoning War. She was a leader of the Zora, and she attained her status as a Sage after receiving a Secret Stone from Rauru.[4][22]

During "The Sages' Vow" Memory, the Sage of Water reports to Rauru that the last free village in the Gerudo Desert has fallen to Demon King Ganondorf.[23] Within the Forgotten Temple, Rauru grants the remaining four Secret Stones to the Sage of Water, the Sage of Fire, the Sage of Wind, and the Sage of Lightning, hoping to strengthen them before their battle with the Demon King.[4][24] As a result, the Six Sages swear a vow of loyalty to Rauru.[25]

The Sage of Water during the Imprisoning War

In flashbacks to the Imprisoning War, the Sage of Water can be seen wielding a Lightscale Trident. She appears wounded by Gloom during "The Imprisoning War" Memory. In attempt to distract Demon King Ganondorf, she throws her Trident at him, which Zelda sends backwards using Recall. Following this, the Sage of Water witnesses Rauru sacrifice himself to seal the Demon King.[26]

After the Imprisoning War, Zelda visited the Sage of Water at the Water Temple.[27] Zelda informed her that Demon King Ganondorf would break from his seal one day, and she asked the Sage to ensure the Zora will help Link face him in the future.[28] The Sage of Water swore that her successor would awaken when the Demon King returns and fight alongside Link.[29] Later, in the "Tears of the Dragon" Memory, the Sage of Water and the other three remaining Sages watch as the Light Dragon flies off into the Sky.

During the "Sidon of the Zora" Main Quest, Link and Sidon repeatedly hear the Sage of Water's voice beckoning them to the Water Temple on Wellspring Island.[30] Once Mucktorok has been defeated, the Sludge covering the Secret Stone in the Water Temple will appear.[31] When Sidon touches the Stone, the two will be engulfed in Light, and the Sage of Water appears before them. She identifies herself as Sidon's ancestor, and she expresses pride in his Power of Water.[1] The Sage reveals that Mucktorok was sent by Demon King Ganondorf to prevent Sidon from finding her Secret Stone.[32] She then proceeds to tell Link and Sidon about the Imprisoning War and her promise to Zelda.[33]

After finishing her story, the Sage of Water reveals that, although Zora's Domain has been saved, the entirety of Hyrule is still threatened by Demon King Ganondorf.[34] Therefore, she asks Sidon to fulfill her promise and help Link as the new Sage of Water.[35] Eager to help save Hyrule, Sidon accepts his destiny as the Sage of Water.[36] With his Secret Stone, Sidon demonstrates his new abilities by summoning his Sage Avatar.[37] He then takes Link's hand and makes the Vow of Sidon, Sage of Water, swearing to fight by his side.[38]

As the Sage of Water, Sidon will appear at Gloom's Origin to help Link face Demon King Ganondorf.[39] When the Demon King summons another Mucktorok, Sidon stays behind to fight it while Link continues forward.[40] He rejoins Link during his battle with the Demon King,[41] but he and the other Sages are soon knocked out by a wave of Gloom.

In the secret post-Credits scene following the defeat of Demon King Ganondorf, Sidon joins Link, Zelda, Purah, and the other Sages at the Temple of Time. The Sages then make a vow to Zelda that is similar to the ones their ancestors made to Rauru, in which they promise to support her and protect Hyrule.[42]
