Purpen is a character in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Biography

Purpen is Hylian who is part of Hoz's Monster-Control Crew squad. He wields a Soldier's Shield and a Boko Reaper, which consists of a Bokoblin Horn and a Tree Branch. He has searched all over Hyrule for an Intact Weapon that has not decayed as a result of the Upheaval, but he has yet to find one.[2]

During the search for Zelda and Link at Hyrule Castle, Purpen can be found within the First Gatehouse, where he examines a Soldier's Broadsword and a Soldier's Spear. He is disappointed that both of them are decayed, and he wonders whether any Intact Weapons remain in Hyrule.[3][4] If Link asks about the Weapons, Purpen explains their weakened state, and he suspects that there may not be any Intact Weapons left in Hyrule.[2] At the end of their conversation, he comments that decayed Weapons can be strengthened.[5] Following the appearance of a figure resembling Zelda, Purpen notices there was a commotion above him and wonders if they could have found an Intact Weapon, though he does not think it is likely.[6]

As part of squad one he uses a Soldier's Shield and a Wooden Stick with an attached Bokoblin Horn during an attack on a Monster Stronghold south of the Hyrule Garrison Ruins. If Link talks to him during the fight, he shows great admiration for captain Hoz's Horse.[7][8]

Nomenclature

Purpen, like many members of the Monster-Control Crew, is named after a carnivorous plant. Specifically, his name is derived from Sarracenia purpurea.
