Ironshell Crabs can be found near Water, usually along beaches in Necluda. They can often be seen walking along the sand or in shallow water, or hiding under rocks. When approached, they will scurry away, but usually are not very fast and can be caught easily. Eating one raw will restore one Heart to Link's Life Gauge. They can also be roasted by a Fire to become Blackened Crabs or chilled by Ice to become Frozen Crabs. Cooking a dish with Ironshell Crabs will increase Link's defense when eaten.

Ironshell Crabs, or other crabs, are required in a Cooking Pot to make a Crab Omelet with Rice, Crab Risotto, Crab Stir-Fry, and Salt-Grilled Crab. Any snail or crab can be used to make a Seafood Skewer. They also count as seafood when making Fish Pie, Creamy Seafood Soup, Copious Fish Skewers, Glazed Seafood, Gourmet Meat and Seafood Fry, Meat and Seafood Fry, Monster Stew, Pepper Seafood, Prime Meat and Seafood Fry, Seafood Meunière, Seafood Rice Balls, and Steamed Fish.
