Gloom Spawn are Enemies in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Characteristics

Gloom Spawn will appear as a patch of Gloom until Link draws near.[2] When he is within range, the Gloom patch will begin moving and grow several long arms with one-eyed hands, which after a few seconds (or when struck) will shriek and begin pursuing Link. The moving Gloom not drains Link's maximum hearts on contact, but when a hand grabs Link, it will continually drain him until he is able to escape its grasp.[3]

Gloom Spawn will pursue and surround Link quickly such that escape is extremely difficult, though climbing out of the hands' reach can provide temporary respite; the Gloom cannot climb up walls. The hands will also be temporarily stunned if set on fire including from explosions, and will temporarily go limp if hit in their weak point, the eyes. This makes Bomb Flowers and other explosives an effective tool against them, particularly from a high vantage point. Dazzlefruits will also work to stun the hands.

If Link does not defeat all the hands quickly enough, they may re-emerge from the Gloom. Gloom Spawn will not give up until every hand is defeated, at which point it will transform into a Phantom Ganon. Unlike Phantom Ganon, Gloom Spawn will not drop any items and does not appear in the Hyrule Compendium. They are allegedly monsters completely coated in Gloom.[3]

Notes

  • The eyes on the hands of Gloom Spawn resemble the Glowing Eyeballs seen in Pools of Malice in Breath of the Wild. The arms are also similar to those of Ganondorf's mummy in the beginning of the game.
  • If Link is on the Surface when attacked by Gloom Spawn, the sky will turn red as when during a Blood Moon.
  • The hands of Gloom Spawn are sometimes referred to as "Gloom Hands", but this term is not actually used in-game.
