The Deku Butler is a character in Majora's Mask.[1]

Biography

The Deku Butler is the loyal servant of the Deku King, who lives in the Deku Palace. He is very proper and polite and is able to keep his head much better than the Deku Royal Family he serves.[2] Prior to the events of Majora's Mask, the Deku Butler used to race with his son,[3][4] who eventually left his home without a trace, leaving the Deku Butler worried.[5]

When Link arrives at the Deku Palace, the Deku Butler comments at the sad state the from Deku Kingdom finds itself in. This from having a kidnapped Princess, a poisoned Swamp, and a King who will not listen to reason and is only willing to blame the Foolish Monkey for the Deku Princess's disappearance.[6] Moreover, the Deku Butler fears that the Deku Princess has been caught up in trouble, but since the Deku King is unwilling to calm down, the Kingdom cannot send out troops to look for her.[2] After Link rescues the Princess and clears the Southern Swamp of the poison, the Deku Butler thanks the young hero for his help and asks him to meet in the Deku Shrine to give him a reward.[7] Here, the Butler leads Link through a labyrinth full of traps. If the young hero manages to keep up, the Deku Butler will apologize for trying to outrun him, saying he was reminded of when he used to race his son, and will give him the Mask of Scents.[4] In Majora's Mask 3D, if Link reaches the end of the Deku Shrine in another cycle after already receiving the Mask of Scents, the Deku Butler will give him a Fishing Hole Pass.[8]

During the end credits, the Deku Butler is seen mourning at a twisted Tree found in the Sealed Room that leads to the Clock Tower. This is the same one that Tatl comments on at the beginning of the game.[9] Apparently, the Skull Kid had come across the Deku Butler's Son at that spot and stripped him of his soul, which he later used to transform Link into a Deku Scrub.[10]

Trivia

  • In the Official Nintendo Power guide to Majora's Mask as well as the section for the Official Nintendo Power Guide for the Legend of Zelda Collector's Disc on the GameCube, the section for the Deku Butler race after saving the Deku Princess is called "The Butler Did It", referring to a stock trope in mystery genre of literature that indicates that the butler was the one responsible for the main crime (usually the murder of his master).
