Eldin is a region in Breath of the Wild.

Features and Overview

Eldin is a vast Region in northern Hyrule. It is a largely mountainous stretch of land that consists densely of foothills, deep gorges, and volcanoes. The Region consists of three smaller areas: Eldin Canyon, Death Mountain, and the Eldin Mountains. The Eldin Canyon is the largest of these areas, covering the entirety of southern, central, and northeast Eldin.

The Eldin Region is a rugged valley in the south, consisting of foothills and small cliffs, but is otherwise a harmless trek. Further to the north and closer to Death Mountain, however, the land increasingly grows more perilous with harder terrain and volcanic activity. As Link nears this area, the Temperature grows exceedingly hot and causes Link and any wooden Gear equipped to catch on fire. Link can withstand the high Temperatures by consuming Food or Elixirs that grant fire resistance, or by wearing any of the Flamebreaker Set, allowing him to safely travel through the hotter climate. Some areas, however, such as Death Mountain and the Abandoned North Mine, are even hotter and require Link to either wear at least two Flamebreaker pieces, or to wear one and consume a fire resistant Food. The northernmost area of Eldin is a barren, dead wasteland that sits along the ends of Hyrule. This area extends to the northwest through the Eldin Mountains, north of the Great Hyrule Forest.

Due to its hotter climate, Eldin hosts a number of Hot Springs that will gradually recover Link's health as he swims through them. As another result of the climate, certain items will begin to burn as they are placed on the ground in the Region's volcanic areas. Through this, it is possible to grill certain Food. As very few people can naturally withstand the intense heat without the aid of Food or Armor, the Eldin Region is home almost exclusively to the Goron Tribe, who live in Goron City in central Eldin. Animals well adapted to the climate, such as Fireproof Lizards, Hotfeather Pigeons, and Eldin Ostriches, also inhabit the Region throughout.

Eldin is also a major resource of Ores which are found inside Ore Deposits, and also has a high abundance of Luminous Stone Deposits.

During present events, the Eldin Region is plagued by the Divine Beast Vah Rudania, which crawls along the rockface of Death Mountain. Vah Rudania has caused Death Mountain's eruptions to worsen,[1] which conversely has also caused the Gorons' mining operations to decline.[2] Vah Rudania is also responsible for the Magma Bombs that are erupted.[3] As Link enters Goron City to quell Vah Rudania from Calamity Ganon's influence, he meets the Gorons' Boss, Bludo.[4] Link learns that the Gorons have been using Cannons to drive away Vah Rudania, but it always returns.[5] Bludo was planning to use the Cannon again, but is unable to due to his sore back.[6] His partner, Yunobo, had went to the Abandoned North Mine to fetch him some painkillers, but has yet to return.[7] Bludo sends Link to find Yunobo, beginning the first phase in the "Divine Beast Vah Rudania" Main Quest.

At the Abandoned North Mine, Link frees Yunobo from the Vault he was trapped in during a rock slide.[8] Link then returns to Bludo, and is told about Daruk, the deceased Goron Champion who controlled Vah Rudania 100 years ago, prompting Link to remember a Memory of him. Bludo then adds that Yunobo is a descendant of Daruk, and can thus use Daruk's Protection.[9] He explains that Yunobo uses this ability when the Gorons fire him at Vah Rudania to drive it away.[10] However, even after taking the painkillers, Bludo's back is still too sore, forcing him to cancel their plan to drive away Vah Rudania. He asks Link to go to the Bridge of Eldin where Yunobo is to tell him the news. At the Bridge, Link saves Yunobo again from a pair of Black Moblins. Despite the change of plans, Link announces that he wants to board Vah Rudania. The pair then team up as they lower the Bridge of Eldin and prepare to scale Death Mountain to weaken the Divine Beast.

Vah Rudania attempts to hinder their progress by deploying Sentries along the mountain path. However, the pair manage to sneak by and use the three Cannons stationed around the Mountain to weaken Vah Rudania. The final Cannon sends Vah Rudania crashing down into Death Mountain's crater, allowing Link to board the Divine Beast. There, with the guidance of Daruk's spirit, Link activates the Divine Beast's Terminals and defeats Fireblight Ganon, allowing Daruk to regain control of Vah Rudania.

Eldin Canyon

Main article: Eldin Canyon

Eldin Canyon is the most expansive area of Eldin. It covers the majority of the Region, extending from southern and central Eldin to the northeast. The southern portion consists of the Region's base, and is mainly a mountainous valley with deep gorges and rugged slopes. This portion serves as the main entrance to Eldin, via the road that paves between Central Hyrule and northern Lanayru. The central portion has prevalent volcanic activity with pools and rivers of lava formed by Death Mountain's eruptions. The northernmost portion is a barren, mountainous wasteland devoid of life, which is shared with the Eldin Mountains.

Eldin Mountains

Main article: Eldin Mountains

The Eldin Mountains are a mountain range in northwestern Eldin. It stretches westward from the main region toward Hebra. The area closest to Eldin is primarily a barren wasteland, having dead trees and scattered skeletal remains. Further to the west and closer to the Great Hyrule Forest, the area gradually grows more abundant in vegetation.

Death Mountain

Main article: Death Mountain

Death Mountain is the largest mountain in Eldin. Its eruptions are responsible for the region's high volcanic activity. The Divine Beast Vah Rudania crawls along its rockface during present events. Death Mountain is surrounded by a moat of lava it feeds into, which can only be crossed by using the Bridge of Eldin.

A number of signs along the main road through Eldin guides the way to Death Mountain Summit, by denoting certain areas as a Death Mountain Marker. The first of these signs begins shortly before the Maw of Death Mountain and ends at the final sign atop Death Mountain Summit.
