First Hylian Script
Fan, the first iteration of Hylian text was written on various important rocks and pedestals in ALttP. Unlike later Hylian scripts, this was just a repeated string of nonsensical symbols. The Book of Mudora, presumably a guide to ancient Hylian, is required to translate the ancient Hylian into messages that Link can understand.

The Japanese versions of - include Egyptian hieroglyphs among the letters, whereas English localizations of - removed them.
Mudoran
Mudoran
ALttP is the iteration of ALttP text that appears in ALttP. Unlike later Hylian scripts, Mudoran is unintelligible. It is found on various important rocks and pedestals.

Era of the Hero of Time
|-
The Hylian writing system from the Era of the Hero of Time was introduced in OoT and later appears in MM. It is a syllabary based on Japanese Kana, merging both Hiragana and Katakana. However, unlike these scripts, this syllabary lacks sutegana and uses full sized characters for Yōon and Sokuon. It also lacks punctuation marks, such as Chōonpu, as well as distinction for diacritical letters via Dakuten and Handakuten, limiting the full dexterity of the syllabary when emulating Japanese text.

Second Hylian Script
This syllabary appears all throughout Hyrule and Termina on signs and architecture.
Fan the second set of Hylian characters was introduced in OoT and later appeared in MM. The syllabary, where letters represent syllables, is a cipher of Japanese Kana, merging both Hiragana and Katakana. However, unlike these scripts, this syllabary lacks several characters like the small form Kana used in contracted monographs and digraphs (such as the equivalent ァ, ィ, ゥ, ェ and ォ in Katakana) as well as many punctuation marks, such as Chōonpu. Second Hylian also lacks any distinction for diacritical letters via Dakuten and Handakuten, limiting the full dexterity of the syllabary when emulating Japanese text.

Second Hylian appears all throughout Hyrule and Termina on signs and architecture.

Third Hylian Script
Era Without a Hero
Fan, the third known Hylian syllabary was introduced in TWW, later appearing in FSA, TMC, PH and ST, also making a brief cameo in TP. Like Second Hylian, Third Hylian is a cipher of Japanese, though with more characters to represent the diacritic monograph sets, Dakuten and Handakuten. However, Third Hylian lacks Yōon compatibility, as all letters are full form, lacking minuscule form diphthong lettering. For example, the Japanese きゃ must instead be written as きや and interpreted as Yōon.
The Hylian writing system from the Era Without a Hero was introduced in TWW, later appearing in FSA, TMC, PH, and ST, and briefly in TP. It is a syllabary based on Japanese Kana and Hindu-Arabic numerals. It supports Chōonpu, Dakuten, and Handakuten, but typically lacks sutegana, therefore using full size characters for Yōon and Sokuon. For example, the Japanese きゃ and きや are not differentiated in this writing system, except for a few rare occasions.

Chronologically, Third Hylian is used frequently throughout Hyrule by the Hylian people in the Force Era. It was inexplicably replaced by Second Hylian by the Era of the Hero of Time, but later came back in use during the Era without a Hero. In -, Third Hylian appears as an ancient spoken language dating back to the Era without a Hero. By the time of the Era of the Great Sea, contemporary beings are incapable of comprehending it, though the written form appears frequently throughout the Great Sea, indicating that the syllabary survived the spoken language accompanying it. Ancient beings, however, are capable of speaking it, as the Great Deku Tree accidentally slips into it when he confused Link for the Hero of Time. Valoo and Jabun also exclusively speak it, and certain Rito are appointed the role of attendant to the Sky Spirit, learning the ancient tongue in order to communicate with him. Third Hylian appears as a written text in the World of the Ocean King and is later carried over into New Hyrule by the settlers of the newfound kingdom.

Curiously, Third Hylian appears during the Era of Twilight on tombstones in Kakariko Graveyard. It later succeeds Fourth Hylian in the Shadow Era.
This syllabary is used as early as the Force Era, persisting throughout the Adult Timeline until the Era of Hyrule's Rebirth.

Japanese copies of - included a key for translating Third Hylian on the back of the instruction manual, allowing dedicated players to decipher the text in-game. However, during -s Second Quest, all Hylian speech is translated, though Link still reacts as though he cannot understand. This key chart was again shown in HH.
In TWW, the syllabary appears as an archaic dialect dating back to the Era without a Hero. By the time of the Era of the Great Sea, it had became almost obsolete; its remaining speakers being ancient beings such as the Great Deku Tree, Valoo, Jabun, and the King of Red Lions, as well as the Rito appointed to the role of Valoo's attendant, who learned it to communicate with him. Despite the dialect not widely spoken in the Era of the Great Sea, its syllabary is commonly used throughout the Great Sea and the World of the Ocean King by their inhabitants, and is later carried over into New Hyrule. It makes a small appearance in TP on tombstones in Kakariko Graveyard.

Fourth Hylian Script
Twilight Era
Fan is a stylized cipher based on the Latin alphabet used in English. It appears predominately in TP though it briefly appears in SS as well. Fourth Hylian appears on signs and maps throughout Hyrule, albeit with a few lexical errors commonly surrounding Japanese transliteration of English text causing L and R to be used interchangeably. There is no letter casing for Fourth Hylian, as all letters are effectively majuscule. Additionally, the non-canonical Wii version of - mirrors the text.

Sixth Hylian Script
-
The Fan alphabet appearing in ALBW and BotW is a modified form of Fifth Hylian; new characters have been included and some letter values have changed. Like Fifth Hylian, it is also imperfect and possesses duplicates letters: D is identical to G, E is identical to W, F is identical to R, J is identical to T and O is identical to Z.
The Hylian writing system that appears in ALBW, TFH, BotW and TotK is a modified form of the Sky Era alphabet. Both alphabets share some symbols while others are very similar. Several letters in this alphabet map to the same Hylian characters, namely D and G, E and W, F and R, J and T, and O and Z.

Nintendo has released an official key which allows translation of the in-game text into English.Fact
Writing appearing in ALBW uses an inverted, but otherwise identical alphabet.

Hylian is the main language used in Hyrule.[1] Throughout the Timeline, many forms and iterations of both written and spoken Hylian have appeared, sometimes being interwoven and revived across whole eras. There are presently six forms of Hylian confirmed to be used by the residents of the Kingdom of Hyrule, and many more languages used by other species as well.

Overview

Mudoran

Main article: Mudoran

Mudoran is the iteration of Hylian text that appears in A Link to the Past.[2] Unlike later Hylian scripts, Mudoran is unintelligible. It is found on various important rocks and pedestals.

Era of the Hero of Time

The Hylian writing system from the Era of the Hero of Time was introduced in Ocarina of Time and later appears in Majora's Mask.

This syllabary appears all throughout Hyrule and Termina on signs and architecture.

Era Without a Hero

The Hylian writing system from the Era Without a Hero was introduced in The Wind Waker,[3] later appearing in Four Swords Adventures, The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks, and briefly in Twilight Princess. It is a syllabary based on Japanese Kana and Hindu-Arabic numerals. It supports Chōonpu, Dakuten, and Handakuten, but typically lacks sutegana, therefore using full size characters for Yōon and Sokuon. For example, the Japanese きゃ (Kya) and きや (Kiya) are not differentiated in this writing system, except for a few rare occasions.[4][5][6][7]

This syllabary is used as early as the Force Era, persisting throughout the Adult Timeline until the Era of Hyrule's Rebirth.[8]

In The Wind Waker, the syllabary appears as an archaic dialect dating back to the Era without a Hero. By the time of the Era of the Great Sea, it had became almost obsolete; its remaining speakers being ancient beings such as the Great Deku Tree, Valoo, Jabun, and the King of Red Lions, as well as the Rito appointed to the role of Valoo's attendant, who learned it to communicate with him.[9] Despite the dialect not widely spoken in the Era of the Great Sea, its syllabary is commonly used throughout the Great Sea and the World of the Ocean King by their inhabitants, and is later carried over into New Hyrule. It makes a small appearance in Twilight Princess on tombstones in Kakariko Graveyard.

Twilight Era

The Hylian writing system from the Twilight Era is a cipher based on the Latin alphabet used in English,[8] but with no letter casing. It appears predominately in Twilight Princess on signs and maps throughout Hyrule, albeit with a few lexical errors commonly surrounding Japanese transliteration of English, causing L and R to be used interchangeably. The non-canonical version of the alphabet found in the Wii version of Twilight Princess features its letters flipped horizontally.

In Skyward Sword, the alphabet is found on the box art as well as on walls in the Sealed Temple and Sky Keep.

Sky Era

The Sky Era alphabet appears exclusively in Skyward Sword.[8] It is a cipher mostly matching the Latin alphabet, with a few duplicate letters. D is identical to W, E is identical to K, G is identical to Q, I is identical to X, O is identical to Z and P is identical to T, which complicates translations.[10]

A Link Between Worlds

The Hylian writing system that appears in A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is a modified form of the Sky Era alphabet. Both alphabets share some symbols while others are very similar.[8] Several letters in this alphabet map to the same Hylian characters, namely D and G, E and W, F and R, J and T, and O and Z.

Writing appearing in Lorule uses an inverted, but otherwise identical alphabet.

Tears of the Kingdom

Tears of the Kingdom continues to use the same script from Breath of the Wild, but also features Ancient Hyrulean from the era of Hyrule's founding which cannot be read by Link. If Link takes a Picture of Ancient Hyrulean text on an Ancient Tablet and brings it to Wortsworth in Kakariko Village, he will read and summarize the text for Link. Ancient Hyrulean is written in Middle English, rather than modern English.

Other Scripts

Link's Awakening DX

While the Hylian language does not appear in any form, one of the pictures in the DX version contains posters in plain English and Japanese. As Koholint Island is separate from Hyrule, this should not indicate an evolution of the Hylian language, though it has been derived from real life Japanese and English later on.

Other Appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In the Temple stage from Super Smash Bros. Melee, Hylian from the Era Without a Hero appears on certain platforms. When translated, it reads "Smash Brothers".

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The Temple stage also appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where the text reading "Smash Brothers" also appears.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

The Temple stage reappears in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, where it contains the same "Smash Brothers" text.

Mario Kart 8

In Hyrule Circuit, a sign with Beedle's face appears with Hylian from A Link Between Worlds written on it. When translated, it reads "Item Shop".
