Cranks are recurring Objects in The Legend of Zelda series.(MM)[1] Cranks go unnamed in Majora's Mask 3D, A Link Between Worlds, and Tri Force Heroes.

Location and Uses

Cranks are a type of Switch that are activated by rotating a handle around an axle, either by Link manually pushing or pulling the handle, or through the use of a grabbing Item such as the Hookshot to do so from a distance. They typically act as valves which control the flow of Water inside a Dungeon, in turn affecting Water-powered mechanisms or the amount of Water in a given room.

Majora's Mask

A Link Between Worlds

Cranks appear throughout the Swamp Palace in A Link Between Worlds, where the Water can be cycled between three different depth levels in order to fully navigate the Dungeon. The Cranks have two handles that can be pulled with the Hookshot; pulling the left handle lowers the Water level in the Palace, while pulling the right handle raises it. In the center of a Crank is a meter with up to three cyan bars, indicating the current Water level.

Tri Force Heroes

In Tri Force Heroes, Cranks appear solely in the first three Stages of the Water Temple. Using the Gripshot to pull its handle will alternate it between its open and closed positions. Opening a Crank will cause Water to flow into the room through various spouts, raising its level, while closing it will drain the Water to its original level. This must be done several times throughout the Temple in order for the Links to traverse certain areas and transport Items.

In the second Stage, a Crank in the northeast corner is automatically opened when the Links all step on the Big Switch, spawning a number of Enemies as well. The Links can optionally close the Crank by using the Water Rod or forming a Totem to reach it, greatly simplifying the battle.
