Sun Patterns,(MM)[1] also known as Sun Switches,(OoT)[2] are a recurring object in The Legend of Zelda series. Sun Patterns go unnamed in The Wind Waker and Hyrule Warriors Legends.

Location and Uses

Ocarina of Time

Sun Switches are Switches that can be found in the Spirit Temple and Inside Ganon's Castle in Ocarina of Time. They can be activated by shining a Light Beam on them. If a Sun Switch is not the direct path of a Light Beam, it can be reflected at the Sun Switch by rotating a Mirror or using the Mirror Shield. Upon being activated, Sun Switches will either brighten up and smile or they will burn up and disappear. Some Sun Switches may be trapped and cause enemies such as Wallmasters to appear when activated.

Majora's Mask

Sun Patterns can be found in the Stone Tower Temple in Majora's Mask. As well as being activated by shining Light Beams at them, Sun Patterns can also be activated by shooting them with Light Arrows. Some Sun Patterns will burn up and disappear when activated, the rest will brighen up and smile.

In Majora's Mask 3D, the appearance of Sun Patterns were changed to more closely resemble Eyeball Switches in a sun. When activated, the Sun Patterns brighten up and close their eye.

The Wind Waker

Sun Patterns often appear in pairs in the Earth Temple in The Wind Waker. Each pair of Sun Patterns appear in a large statue designed to appear as its eyes. They can be activated by shining Light Beams on them, which can be done by reflecting light with the Mirror Shield or using Medli's Rito Harp. Activating a Sun Pattern causes half of the face of the statue they are in to brighten up but the Sun Pattern will deactivate and the statue will darken if the Light Beam stops shining on the Sun Pattern. If both Sun Patterns are activated, the face of the statue will light up, creating a glow that dissipates Dark Fog and can cause walls weak to Light Beams to crumble. When the statue creates the glow, the Sun Patterns will no longer deactivate and bars of a door will be raised or a series of platforms will lower to form a stairway.

A lone Sun Pattern appears in the room where Link obtains the Mirror Shield. Shining a Light Beam at it will raise the bars on the door, allowing Link to leave.

Other Appearances

Hyrule Warriors Legends

Sun Patterns appear in the Wind and Earth Temples Stage in Hyrule Warriors Legends and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. Unlike other Sun Patterns, they cannot be activated and instead appear in pairs resembling the eyes of the statues in the nooks in the walls around the Faces Keep.
