Earth is a recurring Element in The Legend of Zelda series.[1] Earth represents both the planet of The Legend of Zelda series and objects like dirt, rocks, and other solid terrain.

Role in the series

Earth as a symbolic element

In The Wind Waker, the Earth Temple serves as a place of worship for the Sage of Earth. By playing the Earth God's Lyric, the Sage of Earth provides the Master Sword with its evil-smiting power, a task shared with the Sage of Wind.

The element of Earth plays a similar role in Skyward Sword; Zelda prays at the Earth Spring within a different Earth Temple to cleanse herself after performing a similar ritual at the Sky Spring.

The Earth Element is one of Four Elements required to power the Four Sword.

The element of Earth is embodied by several races of Hyrule. In The Wind Waker, the Rito tribe are descendents of the once-aquatic Zoras who adapted to live on land. They live on the volcanic Dragon Roost Island under the protection of Valoo, and used the Grappling Hook to navigate its crevices before developing the means to fly. Medli, Valoo's personal attendant, awakens as the Sage of Earth to carry on the legacy of her ancestor and previous Sage of Earth, Laruto. Curiously, Valoo is known as the Sky Spirit, while the Great Deku Tree carries the title of the Earth Spirit instead.

The Gorons are also a race of volcano-dwellers who hail from Death Mountain. They are said to be made from rock, and depend on eating stones for nutrition. They navigate the slopes of Death Mountain by curling up into a ball and rolling, similar to a boulder.

The Mogma are a subterranean race from the Eldin region who are avid treasure hunters. They spend much of their time digging for valuables and have a tendency name themselves after metal ores.

A Link to the Past

In A Link to the Past, the Quake Medallion uses the Earth Element by allowing Link to thrust his Master Sword into the ground and cause an earthquake, damaging non-airborne Enemies by either killing them or turning them into Zols.[2][3] The Quake Medallion can shake Items out of Trees, and is used to open the entrance to Turtle Rock.[4]

Majora's Mask

While Earth Magic isn't seen in Majora's Mask, many Enemies will use the Earth surrounding them to their advantage. Nejirons, for example, burrow under the ground and wait until Link walks close to them before quickly rising from the ground and attacking.[5] Nejirons are made of gunpowder and will explode when attacked or when striking Link.[6] Because of this, they can quickly be defeated by Link, so when one Nejiron is defeated, another quickly takes its place, hinting at the fact that there are many Nejirons burrowed under the ground. Similarly, the two Twinmold will burrow under the sand in the arena where they live in order to hide or to attack Link.[7]

Oracle of Ages

The Wind Waker

In The Wind Waker, Earth is the primary Element used by the Sage of Earth, Laruto.[1] Laruto would use her power of Earth to replenish the Power to Repel Evil in the Master Sword by praying inside the Earth Temple.[8] In order to rid of the power in the Master Sword, Ganondorf killed Laruto and stopped the prayers that replenished the power.[9] To regain the power, Link set out for the Sage of Earth's descendant, Medli, to awaken her as a Sage and bring her to the Earth Temple.[1][10] After traversing the Earth Temple and defeating Jalhalla, the pair restored part of the Master Sword's power by playing the Earth God's Lyric.[11]

The Earth Temple and the "Earth God's Lyric" Song both attribute to and contain great power of Earth. The Earth God's Lyric is able to awaken Medli as a Sage, as well as restore the Power to Repel Evil in the Master Sword.[12]

Four Swords Adventures

The Minish Cap

The element of Earth is represented by the Earth Element in The Minish Cap. It is said to be the source of all living things,[13] and it is found inside Deepwood Shrine in Minish Woods.[14] Once Link obtains the Earth Element, he is able to infuse it (along with the Fire Element) into the White Sword,[15] empowering the blade.[16]

Link is also able to dig through Earth by using the Mole Mitts.
