One of the most powerful and wisest beings in all of Hyrule, Rauru led the Chamber of Sages for many centuries, guarding Hyrule's greatest treasure, the Triforce itself.

Rauru had been inside the Sacred Realm waiting for the chosen one to pull the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time. This was prophesied to occur during Hyrule's darkest hour. His long wait was recompensed when finally a young boy named Link arrived.

However, Link was too young to awaken as the chosen hero, so he was sealed way for seven years until he could physically mature. During this time, Ganondorf, the evil king of the Gerudo (who had been allowed access to the Sacred Realm due to Link's sealing), was able to conquer most of Hyrule due to his possession of the Triforce of Power.

Once seven years had passed, Link took up the Master Sword, and with Rauru's guidance and the help of the other six Sages, they defeated Ganondorf and trapped him inside the Sacred Realm.

It is believed by some that Kaepora Gaebora is the physical manifestation of Rauru when he travels outside the Sacred Realm.

Rauru, like several other characters from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (including Saria, Mido, Ruto, Nabooru, and Darunia) was named after a town featured in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
