This article is about the line of figures. For the Rune ability in Breath of the Wild, see amiibo (Rune).

amiibo is a line of near field communication devices available for the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch systems.[7] They are figures or cards of Nintendo characters, as well as third-party characters that have appeared in Super Smash Bros. games. amiibo are scanned by tapping them on the Wii U GamePad, New Nintendo 3DS touch screen, on the NFC reader/writer for the original Nintendo 3DS, or on the Nintendo Switch right Joy-Con.

amiibo are divided into different series, based on the game or game series that particular figure or card is associated with. The same character can appear in different amiibo series, but functions the same in almost all games.

The Legend of Zelda amiibo

So far, four different amiibo series contain The Legend of Zelda-related amiibo: the Super Smash Bros. series, The Legend of Zelda series, the Breath of the Wild series, and the Link's Awakening series. Available amiibo figures are compatible with Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Legends, Twilight Princess HD, Breath of the Wild and Link's Awakening. Additionally, many The Legend of Zelda-related amiibo can be used with other Nintendo games, sometimes even unlocking The Legend of Zelda-related content in these games (such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U or Mario Kart 8).

Generic Support

The Legend of Zelda Games with universal Amiibo support (read-only unless otherwise noted)

The following titles are non-The Legend of Zelda games that support all amiibo, but do not have any specific functions for when The Legend of Zelda character amiibo are used.

Functionality

The Legend of Zelda Series Games

Hyrule Warriors

File:HW Link Ancient Spinner Artwork.png
Artwork of Link riding the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends, scanning an amiibo gives the player an amiibo reward the first time it is scanned each day, with some amiibo for The Legend of Zelda characters giving special rewards. Up to five amiibo rewards can be obtained each day. A Medal is achieved after receiving 100 amiibo rewards. amiibo functionality was added to Hyrule Warriors in Version 1.4.0, which was released on November 27, 2014 worldwide; Hyrule Warriors Legends has amiibo functionality from launch.

Scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo unlocks the Spinner if it is not already unlocked. Otherwise, scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo yields a random third tier weapon for Link rated 3 stars or higher. Link and Toon Link can both yield amiibo rewards the same day. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, it is not required to scan either amiibo to obtain the Spinner as it is available from the start.[20]

Scanning a Zelda, Ganondorf or Sheik amiibo yields a random third tier weapon for the scanned character rated 3 stars or higher. Zelda and Sheik can both yield amiibo rewards the same day. If the third tier is not unlocked for that character, scanning these amiibo can yield a third tier weapon for any character.

In Hyrule Warriors Legends, scanning the Wolf Link amiibo yields a random Shackle for Midna or, provided that she is unlocked, a random Mirror for Twili Midna.[21] In Hyrule Warriors, scanning the Wolf Link amiibo will act the same as scanning any other non-specifically supported amiibo. The Toon Link amiibo now unlocks weapons for Toon Link rather than normal Link.

Scanning any other amiibo rewards the player with a random weapon rated 3 stars or lower, a random Material, or a random amount of Rupees.

Twilight Princess HD

In Twilight Princess HD, the Wolf Link amiibo, along with the Super Smash Bros. series of Zelda amiibo, are all compatible. amiibo can be scanned on the collection screen once light has been restored to the Faron Province.[22]

Scanning the Wolf Link amiibo transports Link to the Cave of Shadows dungeon. It can also save a checkpoint of the number of remaining Hearts Link has preserved upon completing a section of the cave, which scanning again while in the cave will restore Link's health to that amount saved. Scanning the Link or Toon Link amiibo will replenish Arrows, while scanning the Zelda or Sheik amiibo will restore Link's Hearts. Scanning Ganondorf's amiibo allows Link to take twice as much damage, and will turn his red Heart gauge blue to signify the change.[23] If used while in Hero Mode, the amiibo will quadruple the damage taken. Aside from the Wolf Link amiibo, all amiibo can only be scanned once per day. Scanning Ganondorf's amiibo a second time states that the damage has already been doubled.[24]

The Wolf Link amiibo is also able to save data, which can then be transferred over to Breath of the Wild. This enables players to have Wolf Link as a travel companion in that game. The amount of hearts Link has in Twilight Princess when the Cave of Shadows data is saved to the amiibo will be given to the Wolf Link companion in Breath of the Wild.

Breath of the Wild

Link's Awakening

By tapping the Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch Link amiibo, Shadow Link will appear in a Chamber Dungeon, chasing down Link through the chambers. Tapping up to five of any other unique The Legend of Zelda-related amiibo unlocks new chambers for use in Chamber Dungeons. Additionally, all Legend of Zelda-related Amiibo can be used to store Chamber Dungeons to save for later and share with others.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Skyward Sword HD

By tapping the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo, Link can travel between saved points in the Sky and on the surface.[25]

Tears of the Kingdom

Main article: amiibo (Ability)

By tapping various amiibo, Link can receive weapons, materials, or fabric used to change the appearance of his Paraglider.

Other Games

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, scanning a compatible amiibo (which all Super Smash Bros. series amiibo are) puts the scanned character in the game as a Figure Player. A Figure Player is an AI opponent that can be trained, leveled up, and customized in order to be used in battles against other players and Figure Players.

amiibo functionality was added to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS in Version 1.0.5, which was released on February 10, 2015 worldwide; Super Smash Bros. for Wii U had amiibo functionality at launch.

Mario Kart 8

In Mario Kart 8, scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo unlocks the Link Racing Suit for Mii characters.

amiibo functionality was added in Version 3.0, which was released on November 13, 2014 worldwide.

One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X

Link costume for Zoro

In One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, scanning a Link amiibo unlocks a Link costume for Zoro. This same effect cannot be achieved with a Toon Link or Wolf Link amiibo.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy +

In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy +, scanning a Link, Toon Link, Zelda, or Sheik amiibo unlocks a special character-themed plane. Scanning Link or Toon Link unlocks the F-14D "Link"; scanning Zelda or Sheik unlocks the F-15SE "Zelda".

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

Promotional image for amiibo compatibility

In Yoshi's Woolly World, scanning a specifically compatible amiibo other than Yoshi (which all Super Smash Bros. series The Legend of Zelda character amiibo are) unlocks a pattern for Yoshi based on that character. Although the game treats Link Yoshi and Toon Link Yoshi as different patterns, they look identical.

Scanning a non-specifically compatible amiibo (which Wolf Link is) will unlock a generic amiibo pattern for Yoshi. In the 3DS port Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, all The Legend of Zelda-related amiibo are compatible with an addition of Wolf Link, which unlocks the pattern based on him.

Super Mario Maker

In Super Mario Maker, scanning a compatible amiibo creates a Mystery Mushroom that grants Mario the appropriate 8-bit costume of the scanned character. It is also possible to unlock these costumes without scanning an amiibo through the 100 Mario Challenge, and some costumes must be unlocked this way. In addition to these, there are also special costumes that are only unlocked by completing Event Courses, which are official courses released by Nintendo. Each costume transforms Mario into the likeness of that character. While the costumes still share Mario's innate abilities and limitations, each costume now makes a special pose by pressing up on the Control Stick or Control Pad, and plays unique tunes when Mario acquires the costume, reaches the Goal Pole, or loses a life.[26][27][28] There exist costumes of Link, Zelda, Sheik, Toon Link, Ganondorf, as well as Tingle, Totem Link (based on the Links from Tri Force Heroes), Wolf Link, and Tetra.

The Link costume allows Mario to hold the Triforce aloft by pressing up on the Control Stick or Control Pad. Running while wearing the costume and quickly turning around will result in the Link costume to stab outward with his Sword. Its associated jingles are from the original The Legend of Zelda: the item obtainment tune will play when the costume is first obtained, the Triforce Piece obtainment tune will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when Link is defeated in the Japanese version of the game will play when Mario loses a life.

The Zelda costume allows Mario to temporarily transform into Sheik by pressing up. Its associated jingles are from A Link to the Past: the item obtainment tune will play when the costume is first obtained, the introduction to "Zelda's Lullaby" will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when Link is defeated will play when Mario loses a life.

The Sheik costume allows Mario to temporarily transform into Zelda by pressing up. Its associated jingles are from Ocarina of Time: the item obtainment tune will play when the costume is first obtained, the music from when Link first meets Zelda will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when Link first meets Sheik will play when Mario loses a life.

The Toon Link costume allows Mario to pull out the Deku Leaf when jumping. Its associated jingles are from The Wind Waker: the item obtainment tune will play when the costume is first obtained, the music from when Link completes the Boating Course will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when Link is thrown into a cell in the Forsaken Fortress will play when Mario loses a life.

The Ganondorf costume's associated jingles are from A Link to the Past: the music from when Ganon leaves Agahnim's body will play when the costume is first obtained, the introduction to Ganon's theme will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when a boss is defeated will play when Mario loses a life.

The Tingle costume can only be unlocked through the 100 Mario Challenge. It allows Mario to strike a pose by pressing up. Its associated jingles are from various games: the "Kooloo-Limpah" jingle will play when the costume is first obtained, the music from when Link rescues Epona from Lon Lon Ranch in Ocarina of Time will play when the goal pole is reached, and the event failure tune from Majora's Mask will play when Mario loses a life.

The Totem Link costume is based on the three Links from Tri Force Heroes forming a Totem, featuring Blue on the bottom, Red in the middle, and Green on top. It can only be unlocked by clearing the Tri Force Heroes Event Course. The Totem Link costume allows Mario to pose with the Sword, Boomerang, and Bow by pressing up. Its associated jingles include 8-bit versions of the item obtainment jingle and the introduction of the Tri Force Heroes main theme.[29]

The Wolf Link costume allows Mario to pose asleep with Midna laughing by pressing up. Jumping while wearing the costume will result in a bark. Its associated jingles are from Twilight Princess: the Tear of Light obtainment tune will play when the costume is unlocked, Wolf Link's howl will play when the costume is first obtained, the seize fanfare will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music when Link fails in the Rollgoal minigame will play when Mario loses a life.[30] The Wolf Link costume can be unlocked by scanning its amiibo, or by clearing the Twilight Princess HD Event Course.

The Tetra costume can be unlocked through the 100 Mario Challenge in Normal or higher difficulty. It allows Mario transform into Zelda by pressing up on the Control Stick or Control Pad. Its associated jingles are from The Wind Waker: the item obtainment tune will play when the costume is first obtained, the music from when Link completes the Boating Course will play when the goal pole is reached, and the music from when Link is thrown into a cell in the Forsaken Fortress will play when Mario loses a life.[31]

Picross 3D: Round 2

The Link puzzle

In Picross 3D: Round 2, scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo will unlock a puzzle of Link riding Epona from Ocarina of Time 3D.

Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash

In Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, scanning any amiibo except Chibi-Robo will give the player coins.[32] Additionally, if thy player scans a specifically compatible amiibo other than Chibi-Robo (which all Super Smash Bros. series The Legend of Zelda character amiibo are), they will unlock a figure for the Toy Capsule Machine in the same pose as the scanned character.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward

In Style Savvy: Fashion Forward (a.k.a. New Style Boutique 2: Fashion Forward), scanning a specifically compatible amiibo will unlock a piece of clothing based on that scanned character. In the European and Australian releases only, Zelda and Sheik are included in the specifically compatible amiibo.

Scanning a Zelda amiibo unlocks the Princess Tiara, which is based on Princess Zelda's tiara.[33] Scanning a Sheik amiibo unlocks the Sheikah Scarf, a scarf bearing the Sheikah symbol.[34] If the associated item is already unlocked, they act like a non-specifically compatible amiibo.

Scanning an amiibo that is not specifically compatible gives the player a Star Hair Clip of one of five possible colors (yellow, pink, blue, green, silver). This includes all The Legend of Zelda character amiibo in the Japanese release, and all The Legend of Zelda character amiibo except Zelda and Sheik in the European and Australian releases.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, compatible amiibo can be scanned to instantly give Kirby an associated Copy Ability, with a limit of 10 per stage.

  • Scanning the Link amiibo gives Kirby the Sword Copy Ability.
  • Scanning the Toon Link amiibo gives Kirby the Cutter Copy Ability.
  • Scanning the Zelda amiibo gives Kirby the Mirror Copy Ability.
  • Scanning the Sheik amiibo gives Kirby the Ninja Copy Ability.
  • Scanning the Ganondorf amiibo gives Kirby the Poison Copy Ability.

Scanning an amiibo that is not specifically compatible, such as the Wolf Link amiibo, gives the player a random Copy Ability.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, through the Welcome amiibo update released on November 2, 2016, by tapping any Zelda amiibo, a Zelda-themed RV will appear at Harvey's camp ground.

This RV contains a villager based on a Zelda character.

  • Scanning the Super Smash Bros. series Link or Zelda amiibo, The Legend of Zelda series Wolf Link, Twilight Princess, or Skyward Sword Link amiibo, or the Link (Archer) amiibo brings W. Link, a smug wolf villager based on Wolf Link. His birthday (December 2) is the day Twilight Princess was released in Japan.
  • Scanning any Toon Link amiibo, or The Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary series and Breath of the Wild series Zelda amiibo brings Medli, a normal bird villager based on Medli. Her birthday (December 13) is the day The Wind Waker was released in Japan.
  • Scanning the Sheik amiibo, Ocarina of Time Link amiibo, Majora's Mask Link amiibo, or Link (Rider) amiibo brings Epona, a peppy horse villager based on Epona. Her birthday (November 21) is the day Ocarina of Time was released in Japan.
  • Scanning the Ganondorf amiibo, The Legend of Zelda Link amiibo, the Guardian amiibo or the Bokoblin amiibo brings Ganon, a cranky pig villager based on Ganon. His birthday (February 21) is the day The Legend of Zelda was released in Japan.

The RVs also contain Zelda-themed furniture, some of which are specific to certain Zelda villagers and some can be obtained with any of them. This furniture can be purchased with MEOW Coupons.

Miitopia

In Miitopia, scanning any compatible amiibo adds a costume based on the character which Miis can wear. The costume is distinct from the Miis' equipment, and is purely cosmetic. The Super Smash Bros. series and The Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary series of amiibo are all compatible. Scanning an amiibo pertaining to Link unlocks his green tunic and hat as a costume.[35] Costumes based on Princess Zelda, Ganondorf and Sheik are also available.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Nintendo Switch version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim features compatibility with the Link (Archer) amiibo from the Breath of the Wild series. Tapping the Link (Archer) amiibo will spawn a Breath of the Wild Treasure Chest. Through any The Legend of Zelda amiibo, the Champion's Tunic (paired with the Hylian Trousers), the Master Sword and Hylian Shield can be unlocked for use.[36] Alternatively, these may be found by exploring Skyrim.[37]

Style Savvy: Styling Star

Bayonetta 2

In the Nintendo Switch version of Bayonetta 2, scanning any Link amiibo (including any Toon Link amiibo and the Wolf Link amiibo) will unlock the Hero of Hyrule costume.

Scanning an amiibo that is not specifically compatible rewards the player with in-game currency, items or crafting materials. This includes all The Legend of Zelda characters other than Link, Toon Link or Wolf Link.
