Rabbit
- Not to be confused with Pols Voice, the recurring rabbit-like enemy.
Rabbits are recurring Animals in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]
Appearances
A Link to the Past
When Link first travels to the Dark World, he is transformed into a Rabbit, reflecting the true nature of his heart.[3]
Rabbits are also seen in the Light World's Haunted Grove with other various woodland Animals listening to the Flute Boy playing.
Link's Awakening
In Link's Awakening, Rabbits are found in the Animal Village. If Link speaks to them, they comment on various things such as how nice the day is, that they need a song from Marin,[4] that a lazy Walrus is blocking the entrance to Yarna Desert,[5] and that Mabe Village and the Animal Village are sister cities despite their small size.[6] One of them also asks whether there is a Dream Shrine in Mabe Village.[6] Another Rabbit says it cannot go to Mabe Village because of all the monsters and expresses concern for Marin's safety.[7] When Link brings Marin to the Animal Village, the Rabbits jump up and down upon seeing her. After Marin's singing awakens the Walrus, a Rabbit says it is calling it as always.[8] The Rabbits are next seen listening to Marin sing the "Ballad of the Wind Fish" to them and the other Animals.[9]
Ocarina of Time
Rabbits do not appear in Ocarina of Time, but they are referred to by the Running Man and the Bunny Hood. According to the Running Man, Rabbits are legendary Animal.[10]
Oracle of Ages
In Oracle of Ages, a Rabbit listens to Nayru sing while singing along itself.[11] The Rabbit and other Animals are frightened away as Veran releases Impa in order to possess the Oracle. After Link defeats Veran in the Black Tower, the curse set on Labrynna]'s people is lifted. Among the characters affected, three Rabbits are seen returning back to normal after being turned to stone.
Spirit Tracks
Rabbits are collectible items in Spirit Tracks. They can be seen hiding behind large Boulders while riding the Spirit Train throughout New Hyrule, or behind floating Barrels in the Ocean Realm, with only their ears visible. Sounding the Train Whistle will cause them to jump, confirming their location. In order to catch the Rabbits, Link must blast the object that they are hiding behind with the Cannon. He will then have ten seconds to capture the Rabbit using the Rabbit Net obtained from Bunnio[12][13] while it hops around the screen in a random manner. If he fails in his attempt, he will have to return at a later time to try again.
In all, there are five different breeds of Rabbit, corresponding to the five Realms they inhabit. Ten Rabbits of each breed can be captured, making for a total of 50 Rabbits spread across New Hyrule. They are as follows:
- Grass Rabbits (Forest Realm)
- Snow Rabbits (Snow Realm)
- Ocean Rabbits (Ocean Realm)
- Mountain Rabbits (Fire Realm)
- Desert Rabbits (Sand Realm)
Once Link manages to capture a Rabbit, he can take it to Bunnio, owner of the Rabbitland Rescue, for a small reward. Bunnio's goal is to take care of all the stray Rabbits in Hyrule.[14] The rescued Rabbits are then left to frolic in an area of the Rabbitland Rescue corresponding to their Realm of origin. When Link catches and brings in a total of five Rabbits of any variety, Bunnio will give him a Heart Container.[15][16] When Link captures ten Rabbits in total, or at least one Rabbit of each breed, he will be given a random Treasure.[17][18] If he is able to catch all 50 Rabbits, he will be rewarded with the first Swordsman's Scroll.[19][20]
Breath of the Wild
In Breath of the Wild, a quest consisting of bringing back a picture of a Blupee to Peeks is named "Legendary Rabbit Trial".
Rabbits also appear as the design of the Hunter's Shield.
Other Appearances
Oracle of Ages (Himekawa)
In the Oracle of Ages manga by Akira Himekawa, when Link and Impa enter a woodland, they are confronted by the forest Animals, including Rabbits. The Rabbits and other creatures surround them and demand they go back.[21][22] Link tries to calm the Animals and tells them he was sent by Princess Zelda to find Nayru.[23] Upon hearing this, the forest creatures realize Link is a Hylian of the old blood and allows the two passage.[24] Two Rabbits listen to Nayru while she sings and plays her harp. One of the Rabbits asks what is wrong when she stops, urging the Oracle to continue singing.[25] The Rabbits watch as Nayru converses with Link and Impa. Once Veran reveals her possession of Impa, the Rabbits and other creatures attack the Sheikah in an attempt to protect Nayru. The attack fails and Veran possess Nayru, using her abilities to travel back in time. One of the Rabbits examine Nayru's harp as Link picks it up. It eyes Ralph with a frown while he talks to Link.
