Monkton
Monkton is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]
Biography
Breath of the Wild
Monkton is an retired Stable Worker at Snowfield Stable.[3] During the day, he paces around the interior of the Stable. At night, he sleeps upright in one of the chairs inside the Stable.
When Monkton was a child, there were not many kids who lived around Snowfield Stable.[4] His only friends were Harry and Mary, whom he would explore with.[5]
Monkton was told to avoid the North Lomei Labyrinth by the adults at the Stable.[6] Despite this, Monkton convinced Harry to enter the Labyrinth to test his courage, but he never saw him again.[7] After this, Monkton realized that the adults were right when they said that the Labyrinth is dangerous.[8]
The adults also warned Monkton to avoid the ruins of the Forgotten Temple in the Tanagar Canyon, as it was also supposedly dangerous[9] However, Monkton still took Mary to investigate the ruins.[10] Unfortunately, Mary slipped and fell into the Canyon, and Monkton never saw her again.[11] That day, Monkton realized that curiosity could also be the cause of tragedy.[12]
When Link approaches him, Monkton asks if he would like to listen to a story.[3] If Link inquires about the story, Monkton claims that he has been reminiscing on his childhood recently.[13] Even in his old age, Monkton is still heartbroken over losing Harry and Mary.[14][15]
After listening to both stories, Monkton tells Link that he overcame his grief over Harry and Mary as he grew older.[16] He then states that two of their descendants are located in the stall next to Snowfield Stable, revealing that both Harry and Mary were Horses.[17] While he may no longer grieve for them, Monkton is still plagued by his memories of Harry and Mary,[18] thinking about them even while he sleeps.[19]

A traveler, eh? Can you spare a minute to listen to a bored, old retiree tell a story?
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Heh, to be honest, growing up out in the middle of nowhere... Well, there weren't really other kids around.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
My only friends were Harry and Mary. I remember playing with Harry out in the maze and Mary out by the ruins...
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
[Tell me about Harry.] There's an enormous maze beyond the Tabantha Tundra just north of here. I don't know who built it or when. The adults always said not to go near it. They said it was too dangerous there.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
One day, I urged Harry to go into the maze as a test of courage. I...I never saw him again.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
I learned the hard way that it really is dangerous there. Children have no real sense of danger, I suppose...
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
[Tell me about Mary.] Maybe you've seen the big canyon to the southeast. There are some secret ruins down at the base of that valley. I don't know who built them or when. The adults always said not to go near. They said it was too dangerous there.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
One day Mary and I went out there to explore and search for the ruins.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
In the blink of an eye, Mary lost her footing. She slipped and tumbled down the cliff.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
I...I never saw her again. Sometimes a child's innocent curiosity can cause tragedies that can never be taken back.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
[What kind of story?] When you get to be my age, you start reminiscing about all the memories from your childhood.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
To this day, the mere memory breaks my heart.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
That memory will haunt me until my dying day...
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
As I grew older, I learned to overcome my grief over losing them. You can't change the past, only the future.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Harry and Mary never made it back, but two of their descendants are in that stall over there. My only friends out in these parts were horses, you see. I suppose that's still true to this day.
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
I just can't relax...
— Monkton (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Harry... Mary...
