Jana is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[7][8]

Biography

Breath of the Wild

Jana is a young Hylian woman who lives at South Akkala Stable in the Akkala Highlands. Starting at 5:00 AM, she tends to the flowers in front of the Stable.[4] She works until 9:00 PM, at which point she sits under a large Tree nearby. If it Rains, she will seek shelter under that same Tree.

Upon first meeting Jana, she will be abrasive towards Link,[9] and she asks him not to bother her as she is thinking about something.[10] Link can speak to her younger sister, Gleema, to learn that Jana likes Armoranths.[11] Upon remembering that this is a secret, Gleema says that Jana will be mad at her again.[12][13]

If Link talks to Jana while he has at least one Armoranth in his Inventory, she asks if he can give it to her.[14] If he does, Jana thanks him and reveals that it is her favorite plant, and since he happened to have one, they could get along with each other.[15]

Jana then asks Link why he came to Akkala, as she believes there is nothing interesting in the Region.[16] If Link responds that he is a traveler or just wandering, Jana will have a request for him.[17] Gleema is a fan of Insects, which Jana does not understand.[18] Supposedly, there is a type of Insect that Gleema wants to see, but she will not tell Jana what it is.[19] Therefore, she asks Link if he could figure out what the Insect is, as Jana wants to know for Gleema's birthday.[20] After this, the "Little Sister's Big Request" Side Quest will begin.

After beginning the Side Quest, Link can ask Jana about Gleema. When asked about her sister during the day, Jana mentions that Gleema is looking for Insects.[6] If it is nighttime when Link asks, Jana states that Gleema is probably asleep.[21] She then reminds Link to find out what the Insect that Gleema wants to see is.[22][23][24]

When Link next speaks to Gleema, she shares that Jana hates dragonflies.[25] Gleema recounts that she was once reading a book about Insects that contained depictions of a Warm Darner, a Cold Darner, and an Electric Darner.[26] However, when she showed the dragonflies to Jana, she said they were creepy and got mad at her.[27] When she remembers that this is a secret, Gleema realizes that Jana is going to get mad at her again.[12] Gleema thinks the only reason Jana found the pictures creepy was because they were close up, and they would be much cuter in real life.[28]

Once Link returns to Jana, she is shocked to hear that Gleema wants to see the three different types of dragonflies.[29] She realizes that the reason Gleema never told her about her wish was due to her hatred of dragonflies.[30] Since it is for Gleema's birthday, Jana asks Link if he could find a Warm Darner, a Cold Darner, and an Electric Darner for her.[31]

When Link has collected all three dragonflies, Jana will nervously ask for them.[32] Unfortunately, once she sees them, she is unable to get over her fear and instead asks Link to deliver them to Gleema on her behalf.[33] After receiving the dragonflies, Gleema will excitedly run over to show them to her older sister,[34] much to Jana's horror.[35]

After she manages to calm down, Jana decides to reward Link for his help.[36] She then gives him a Silver Rupee.[37] While she is fine with most Insects, she explains that she does not like dragonflies.[38] She takes a deep breath to calm herself,[39] after which the Side Quest will be completed.

When Link approaches Jana after completing the Quest, she will recognize him.[40] In the morning, she remarks that he is up early.[41] At night, she encourages him to stay at South Akkala Stable if he needs somewhere to stay.[42] She also makes comments on the weather, noting if it has cooled down or if it is Raining.[43][44] When Link ends his conversation with her, she tells him to take care.[45]

Link is able to ask Jana several questions.[46] If Link has already started the "From the Ground Up" Side Quest, he is able to ask Jana about Hudson.[47] She says that he mentioned building a town before he left for Lake Akkala.[48] She informs Link that Lake Akkala is east of South Akkala Stable, and she encourages him to check it out if he is curious.[49]

Next, if Link asks Jana who she is, she states that she is the second eldest of her sisters, and she works on the flower patch while Kaifa, her older sister, takes care of the livestock.[4] Jana will also say what Gleema is doing.[6][21] She mentions that, while she does not care about most Insects, there is a certain type that she is unable to stand.[50] If Link chooses to ask about where they are, Jana tells him that they are at South Akkala Stable.[51] East of the Stable, Jana says Link will be able to see both Lake Akkala and the Akkala Sea, but those are the only interesting attractions in the area.[52]

Jana is a feminine form of the name "Jan."[53] In Croatian and Serbian, it is a variation of the name "Ana."[54]
