Wooden Boxes,(SS | BotW | EoW)[1][2][3][name references needed] also known as Crates,(MM)[4] are recurring Objects in The Legend of Zelda series. Wooden Boxes go unnamed in Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, The Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword HD and Cadence of Hyrule.

Location and Uses

A crate is a hollow box that often comes in two sizes. Link can lift and throw the smaller variety in order to bust it open, but he must roll into or set an explosive by the larger variant to achieve the same effect. In Breath of the Wild, Link can also set the crates on fire to release the contents, but doing so will cause any food materials to become roasted. Link can climb atop the larger boxes without breaking them to gain a broader view of the surrounding area or to gain extra height in a jump. The larger crates also come in an indestructible variety which can be pushed, allowing Link to use them to reach higher areas or to uncover hidden passages. If anything, single recovery hearts or nominal Rupees can be found inside these boxes. However, in Ocarina of Time, crates often hide Gold Skulltulas. Smaller crates, as seen in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and The Wind Waker can also be used to activate and sustain a Switch.

Wooden Boxes are used throughout the Great Sea to store valuables such as Rupees. They can also be used to hide secret passages through Small Holes. Small Wooden Boxes can float on top of water, which allows them to be used as miniature platforms in the Tower of the Gods.

Wooden Boxes are crates scattered throughout Hyrule. Zelda can learn one as an Echo, and summon it whenever she wishes using the Tri Rod. Wooden Boxes can be stepped on, and move when blown by the wind.

Other Appearances

Cadence of Hyrule

Wooden Boxes can be found inside Houses, Hyrule Castle and the Temple of Brainstorms, and by extension, in Puzzle Mode. The Wooden Boxes in Hyrule Castle bear a depiction of the Triforce on the front of them. Wooden Boxes can be pushed around by the heroes, and can be picked up and thrown with the Power Glove, dealing two Hearts of damage to Enemies. The heroes can jump down onto Boxes but cannot leap up onto them from a lower layer. Sometimes, mazes of Wooden Boxes can be found leading to certain Items. A maze in the Windmill Hut leads to a purple Treasure Chest containing the Hookshot, and another in the southeastern House in Deku Village leads to a purple Chest containing three Diamonds.
