The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom/Unused Content
Items
In the game's data, there is an unused file for a unique Saddle. This Saddle does not have a name.
There is an unused Hyrule Compendium icon and Picture for King's Scales named Item_KingScale
in the game's code.
There is an additional, unused Hyrule Compendium icon and Picture for the Thick Stick named Weapon_Lsword_168
in the game's code.
There is an unused icon for a removed type of Zonaite, labeled as Item_Ore_N
in the files. It does not have a description, and it looks like a set of ingots rather than a piece of stone.[1]
Weapons
Tears of the Kingdom also has various unused Weapons as well. Most notably, Zelda's Torch from the introduction, which has a unique icon along with the name Npc_Zelda_Torch
. This Weapon acts like a lit Torch when switched to in the quick select menu, regardless of any Objects fused to it. It has a blank name in both its 'badly damaged' and 'broken' messages.
Another variant of this weapon can also be found under the name Weapon_Sword_043_SetFire. This is identical to the regular version of Zelda's Torch, minus the inventory icon.
There's also Demo910_Torch too. This is a torch that acts more like a sword, being a sharp weapon able to cut through things like things like trees and grass. Like Zelda's Torch it has a blank name, and it also lacks an icon in the menu.
Armor
There is data for two more pieces of the Ancient Hero's Aspect, indicating it was meant to be more of a standard Armor Set rather than a transformation Item. These change only part of Link's design to resemble the Ancient Hero in the menu, but they act identically to the normal Item in the game world itself.
House Rooms
All the house rooms from the Dream Home building mini game are valid inventory items, which can be taken out at any time. These do not work properly when held (falling right through the floor in the process), but can be summoned as expected while gliding, and then used to build a house anywhere in the game. Interestingly, the first few of these rooms actually have unused icons when added to the inventory, which will display as expected in the recipe book if they're used for cooking purposes. These variants are also impossible to sell, with shopkeepers refusing to buy them like other materials.
They can also be destroyed by a Frox's attacks, despite such an enemy never coming close to Tarrey Town.
A full list of these rooms can be found below:

Yiga Clan Members
The entire population of the Yiga Clan Hideout are also valid inventory items in this game.[2] Like the house rooms, they too fall through the ground when held, but will appear properly if held while gliding.
For the most part they work like other materials do (you can get 21 of them at once, they can be sold to shops and they can be used for cooking purposes), but some of them have special properties.
For example, Npc_Assassin_Junior_Azito002, Npc_Assassin_Junior_Azito003 and Npc_Assassin_Junior_Azito004 are shopkeepers from the Yiga Clan Hideout. When summoned, they will buy items from Link regardless of where they are in the world.
There's also Npc_Assassin_Middle_Azito001, which is the Blademaster running the mini game in the Yiga Clan Hideout. Upon speaking to him, he will teleport Link back to the hideout regardless of the former's current location, allowing for a method to escape boss battles, mini games and side quests.
A full list of valid Yiga Clan items is as follows:
- Npc_Assassin_Junior: Yiga Footsoldier (default)
- Npc_Assassin_Junior_001

Shrine Equipment
DgnObj_BeamDevice_Static
This is a beam emitter used in shrines. When summoned it appears where Link is standing, and will either stick around if placed down, or vanish if put away again. It does have solid collision though, so Link should walk away a bit before placing down the item to avoid getting stuck inside it.
DgnObj_IRBeamDevice_Static_Beam
A red tripwire laser found in shrines. This seems to crash the game in some instances, but if placed down it will show as a giant red laser that does nothing when interacted with.
Master Kohga Ball Projectile
AssassinRockBall is the giant ball thrown by Master Kohga. It constantly explodes if held by Link, though doesn't do any damage. Given that it constantly pushes Link around when held, it is by all means and purposes impossible to cook with.
Octorok Treasure Chest
The treasure chest used by Treasure Octoroks is an inventory item too, under the name OctObj_Stone_TBox. It quickly flies through the ground when summoned, though can push NPCs around if they come into contact with it.
Cushion
The cushions in the Starlight Memories store are valid inventory items under the name Obj_Cushion. They have no gravity or interaction physics, are listed as Ruby Circlets in the inventory, and can be sold for 500 rupees.
Winterwing Butterfly
An alternate version of the Winterwing Butterfly can be found in the files, under the file name Animal_Insect_NA. It is identical to the normal one, minus the icon.
Enemies
There is an unused Hyrule Compendium entry of a two-headed Flame Gleeok. This Flame Gleeok does not have a description nor a display name.
Added Effects
A couple of unused Food Added Effects exist in the files as well. These include scrapped Effects called TwiceJump
and EmergencyAvoid
, as well as level 3 versions of SwimSpeedUp
, AttackUpCold
, AttackUpHot
and AttackUpThunderstorm
. The former two have no effect when used in-game, while the latter work exactly as expected.
Text
Multiple unused messages can also be found in Tears of the Kingdom. For example, the message for speaking to a Goddess Statue with maximum Hearts and Stamina returns from Breath of the Wild, despite it also be impossible in Tears of the Kingdom too:
You already overflow with life force and stamina. Increasing your power any further may destroy you.
— Goddess Statue (Tears of the Kingdom)
As does the message for speaking to the Horned Statue without any upgrades, despite this being impossible in Tears of the Kingdom:
What's this? You haven't received even one more Heart Container or Stamina Vessel? Such a pity... I was eager to help you with a minor transaction. But not if you have nothing to trade. Consult a Goddess Statue to improve yourself, and then return here to pray.
— Horned Statue (Tears of the Kingdom)
There is also a description for collecting a Schema Stone without Autobuild, despite this being impossible in-game:
Schema Stone
— Inventory (Tears of the Kingdom)
A stone etched with what looks like a design schematic. It could be useful....
Locations
While the final game's Dungeons are on the same map as the main overworld, Tears of the Kingdom also has files for earlier versions of these Dungeons that take place on separate maps, which can be found in the files named:
LargeDungeonWind
LargeDungeonFire
LargeDungeonWater
LargeDungeonThunder
LargeDungeonHyruleCastle
LargeDungeonSoul
These maps have a plethora of differences from the final ones.[3]
General Differences
- Certain Treasure Chests have no Items defined for them. These give Link an Opal when opened.
- Enemies have basic Weapons rather than area-specific ones. These include Wooden Sticks in the Fire Temple, and rusty broadswords in the Water Temple.
- Ascend does not work at all.
- There are no maps, just an overlay on top of Central Hyrule. The actual floors are marked though, and the X Button can be used to switch to the normal Hyrule map as per the final game.
- Sages do not appear in these maps when the relevant quest is active, meaning the terminals cannot be activated.
Wind Temple
- The vortex surrounding the Dungeon is not present, nor are the ships that circle it.
- The area only has a level 1 Freezing Climate, meaning that only one level of cold resistance is needed to survive.
Fire Temple
- The Scorching Climate found in the final Dungeon is not present.
- The Dungeon has a roof that can be landed on, since the Depths ceiling is not present. This has texture errors.
- As per above, enemies use wooden Weapons, Shields, and Bows rather than Zonaite ones.
- Lower levels are extremely dark due to the limited lighting setup, making the floor almost invisible in places.
Water Temple
- Most Treasure Chests lack defined contents, and hence contain Opals.
- The Sludge is invisible if the area is revisited after clearing the Zora story quest.
Lightning Temple
- The Ore Deposits around the sides and on the roof of the Dungeon are missing
- If visited before activating the location normally, the Gibdo hives and pink glowing orb on the front of the Dungeon are missing
- A bridge can be seen out front that is usually near invisible due to the sand in the final version
- The whole Temple is fully lit up, with no dark rooms
Hyrule Castle
- The Horriblins in the tunnel are absent here.
- Trees and other Objects load in as Link approaches them in a very visible way
- The Shrine on this map is actually the Isisim Shrine rather than the Serutabomac Shrine, and takes Link to Eldin when exited.
- The Bokoblins in the monster forces are basic red ones
- The Hinox in the Library is a red one without the iron greaves it usually has
- It drops rusty weapons and a Construct Bow rather than Knight's tier weapons
- The Fire-Breath Lizalfos in Princess Zelda's Room are unarmed
- The Silver Moblin that usually attacks with a Knight's Claymore is a red one with a Traveler's Claymore.
- Various pieces of water are cut off, and end in mid air.
Spirit Temple
- This version of the area is actually a Dungeon of sorts, not a boss arena for the Seized Construct.
- The first area has a floating platform above a large flat area with Mineru's Construct and a teleport pad
- This leads to a lower level with a single Soldier Construct, a spiked ball and an iron pole
- Which in turns leads down to a large open platform with numerous Soldier Constructs, one Captain Construct and various objects that can be fused to Mineru's Construct
- Past the edge here is another platform with multiple emitters and an ice block
- Followed by a single platform with an Ice Chuchu and an Ice-Breath Lizalfos
- The map doesn't exist here
- And the save location for the area is set to Hyrule Field, not the Spirit Temple.
Rooms
There are also various unused rooms found within the game. These include a room behind a permanently locked door at the top of Hyrule Castle, and one in the space between Fashion Passion and the Gerudo Secret Club. Both of these were also present in Breath of the Wild, and they are fully modelled despite not usually being accessible to Link.
There is also a Cave near the Samasa Plain that can be found behind a wall if Link clips out of bounds. This was accessible in Breath of the Wild as well, albeit with nothing inside it.[4]
Chasm
There is an unused chasm/pit underneath the floor near the Mu-ufatur Lightroot, at roughly the coordinates 2906, 3094, -1024. This chasm is fully modeled on all sides, with patches of Gloom on the walls and floor, and goes down about 300 meters, twice as far as the shaft to the boss arena in the Spirit Temple. Given there is nothing at the bottom of this pit, it is unknown what it would have been used for in-game.[5]
Horses
In normal gameplay, the only horses you can register at a stable are regular ones, the Giant Horse, the Golden Horse, the Giant White Stallion, Spot and Epona. If you try to register a Stalhorse, the stable owner will turn it away.
However, it's possible to add Stalhorses and the Satori to your registered horses lists via save editing.[6] This lets you edit their gear, change their mane style, upgrade or revive them at the Horse God's fountain and use them for relevant minigames and sidequests. Given that Breath of the Wild would simply crash if you managed to trick the game into letting you register one, this implies that these types of horse might have once been possible to register in Tears of the Kingdom.
The Lord of the Mountain
Additionally, the Lord of the Mountain can be added into Tears of the Kingdom as a horse via save editing, despite it usually only appearing in cutscenes in the game. In this form, it doesn't have an entry in the Hyrule Compendium, nor the infinite stamina its counterpart from Breath of the Wild had, but it can be rode anywhere without disappearing just like any other horse in the game.
Unused Sage Mechanics
Usually, it's impossible to finish one of the Regional Phenomena quests or Guidance from Ages Past while all the sages are with you in Tears of the Kingdom. However, if you manage to do so by escaping the Demon King's Army battle, the new sage will appear outside Gloom's Origin and only join your party once you meet them there.[7] This indicates the sages may have been intended to enter the battle one by one, like during the fight with Demon King Ganondorf.
Unused NPC Behaviour
During the Kara Kara Bazaar defence mission, you're not normally not allowed to leave the area. However, if you manage to do so, and head to Gerudo Town, many of the guards will be in their positions from the defence mission there, with the dialogue from said mission.[8] Given that their dialogue and positions reset after clearing the Kara Kara Bazaar defence mission, it's unknown why the game changes it to begin with.
