100 years before the beginning of Breath of the Wild, a fortune-teller predicted the revival of Calamity Ganon.[3][4] Following this advice, King Rhoam began mass excavations across Hyrule, which uncovered Guardians, several Ancient Shrines, and the four Divine Beasts.[5]Zelda and the bearer of the Master Sword, Link, were identified as the two who would seal away Calamity Ganon.[6]Daruk, Mipha, Urbosa, and Revali were chosen as Champions and pilots of the Divine Beasts.[7]
The second Great Calamity occurred on the day of Zelda's 17th birthday. Before the Champions could return to the Divine Beasts, Calamity Ganon corrupted both them and the Guardians with his Malice and Blight Ganon.[8] During this attack, Hyrule Castle Town was destroyed, the Champions were killed.[9] While protecting Zelda from a Guardian, Link collapsed due to his injuries.[9] To save his life, Zelda requested that the Sheikah place Link in the Shrine of Resurrection, where he was sealed for 100 years.
The Age of Burning Fields began in Necluda following the Great Calamity.[10] During this time, farming in the Region was impossible due to the destruction incurred during the Guardians' attack.[11] Eventually, Necluda recovered enough for Hateno Village to start harvesting crops, leading to it becoming self-sufficient.[12]
After collapsing during the Great Calamity, Link slept for 100 years in the Shrine of Resurrection.[24] Following this, rumors spread about what happened to Link at Blatchery Plain. While most believed that he died, stories spread about him being put into a deep sleep so he could return to fight Calamity Ganon.[25] Aware that Link would eventually wake up, the Koroks of Korok Forest prepared the Korok Trials for him.[26]
Hearing the voice of Zelda, Link wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection 100 years after the Great Calamity.[24][27] As Link explores the Great Plateau, Zelda instructs him to head to the location marked on his Sheikah Slate's Map.[28] This leads Link to the top of the Great Plateau Tower, which is partially exposed in the ground. Placing his Sheikah Slate into the Sheikah Slate Pedestal activates the Tower, causing it and the other Sheikah Towers to rise from beneath the ground.[29] At the top of the Great Plateau Tower, Zelda bids Link to remember, informing him that he has been asleep for 100 years.[30] As Malice begins to swirl around Hyrule Castle, Zelda warns Link that the world will end when Calamity Ganon regains its power.[31] She begs Link to rescue her soon, or else it may be too late.[32]

After all Blight Ganon have been defeated, Ganon's Cocoon will emit a golden glow, and Link will hear Zelda's voice.[33] She apologizes, revealing that her power is not strong enough to hold Calamity Ganon any longer.[34] A Guardian laser then erupts from the Cocoon, and Calamity Ganon crashes through the floor of the Throne Room. This causes both him and Link to fall into the Astral Observatory. If any Divine Beasts have been purified, their pilots will unleash their attacks on Calamity Ganon.[35][36][37][38]
