Goron Island is a location in Phantom Hourglass.[1] It is found in the Southeastern Sea.

Features and Overview

The island serves as home to a population of Gorons, both adults and children, who have carved their homes out of the solid rock.[2] The Gorons who live there refer to Link as a "stranger" and "outsider",[3] but nonetheless welcome the young hero and encourage him to meet all of the islanders.[4] On a tiny islet in the southwest corner is a newly-opened Shop run by Mi, the island's only non-Goron resident.[5]

In the northern section of the island lays the Goron Temple, where the Pure Metal Crimsonine can be found, though the path to the Temple along the island's eastern edge is guarded, and only members of the Goron tribe may pass.[6] The island's chief is Biggoron, who will not consider sharing the Pure Metal with Link until he has spoken to all 14 Gorons on the island.[7] In order to reach Biggoron's Chamber, Link will have to shout across a gap in the land (via the player making noise into the Nintendo DS microphone) to ask a young Goron to extend a bridge.[8] While exploring the island, Link will come across another Child Goron who is concerned about the appearance of some Yellow ChuChus on a nearby hill,[9] and will reward the young hero with a Treasure Map for taking to higher ground to defeat them with his Bow.[10]

Once Link has met every Goron on the island, Biggoron will allow him to earn membership in the Goron tribe, as long as he can pass an initiation test which costs 20 Rupees and consists of six multiple-choice questions about the lives of Goron Islanders.[11] Upon passing the test, Link becomes an official brother to the Gorons, who begin to refer to him as "Goro-LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.". However, Biggoron's son, Gongoron, does not accept him so easily.[12] Gongoron then leads Link on a chase through several areas on Goron Island, eventually leading him through the North Maze and into Goron Temple.

Biggoron's Quiz

To test Link's knowledge of Goron Island, Biggoron asks him a randomized selection of six questions. The first three questions are always the same, though asked in a random order, while the last three questions each have three possibilities, with one selected at random. Link is given the option of using one "Gorohint" during the entire quiz, which removes one of the incorrect answers from the question being asked.[13] Link also receives a small reward for each question he answers correctly: a Green Rupee for the first, a Blue Rupee for the second, a Red Rupee for each of the third and fourth, and a Big Green Rupee for the fifth.[14] If he answers a single question incorrectly, he fails the test and must return all of his prize Rupees, in addition to paying the 20-Rupee fee to try again.[14]
