Windfall Island is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2] It is a market town in the Great Sea, and it is known for having the highest population of all the islands in The Wind Waker.
Features and Overview
The Wind Waker
Link first sets foot on Windfall Island after being cast out of the Forsaken Fortress and subsequently rescued by the King of Red Lions. He awakens in an alcove next to the island's beach, where the boat introduces itself. The King of Red Lions then admits that he needs a Sail in order to travel the seas,[3] and suggests that Link may purchase one somewhere on Windfall Island. This is where Link encounters the strange Zunari, who offers him a mystery item for 80 Rupees.[4] This turns out to be the Sail that Link needs, and Zunari then puts his profits toward starting his own Shop, selling Decorations that Link can later discover through the Island Trading Sequence.
On Windfall Island, there are many interesting characters that Link can meet. It soon becomes apparent that the same monster that abducted Aryll has taken its toll on Windfall Island in its search for young, pointy-eared girls, as both the poor and destitute Father of Maggie and the obscenely wealthy Father of Mila beg for Link's help in rescuing their daughters. Several Mini-Games and side-quests take place or begin on the island, including Squid-Hunt, Hide-and-Seek with a gang of children known as the Killer Bees, collecting Joy Pendants for the school teacher Mrs. Marie, and the Pictography-based Lenzo's Research Assistant quest.
It is said that prior to the events of The Wind Waker, in order to avoid the Great Flood, the surviving populations of Hyrule Castle Town and Kakariko Village fled to what would become Windfall Island and founded the community there.[5] People from all over the world come to Windfall Island, and as such, the town is always lively.[6] Many sailors have found their way to the island as well.
There are multiple places of interest on Windfall Island, including a Potion Shop, Bomb Shop, a lighthouse and windmill with a ferris wheel attached, a School for children, a Cafe Bar, Auction House, Game Room, and a Jail where Tingle has been imprisoned. The huge gate at the entrance of town is known to be one of Windfall's most famous features.[7]
