Trees have appeared in every Zelda game and are usually part of the level scenery. In most games, trees are used as blockades to limit Link from proceeding beyond them. In games such as Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, various items like Recovery Hearts and Rupees can be found in trees and knocked down by rolling into the tree's trunk.
Interactive Trees
A Link to the Past introduced trees that react to being run into. Dashing into trees in the Light World would cause apples to fall that Link could eat to replenish health. Occasionally, dashing into a Light World tree would instead release several bees that would then attack Link for disturbing their home. Some trees are also infested with bees in Link's Awakening and Twilight Princess. In Twilight Princess, the bees' nest is one of the only free sources of Bee Larva. The Dark World's trees from A Link to the Past would speak to Link or, on occasion, bomb him.
Oracle of Seasons introduced trees that would change with the season. This would not be found again until Twilight Princess. The Oracle of Seasons version, changing the season could open previously blocked paths. Twilight Princess also repeated the seasonal changes look on a smaller scale to Oracle of Seasons; only trees in the Fishing Hole alternated seasons. Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages also allowed Link to plant Gasha Trees. In the Oracle series, the Mystical Trees bear Mystical Seeds and also serve as warp destinations; the types of Mystical Trees are Ember Trees, Mystery Trees, Scent Trees, Gale Trees, and Pegasus Trees.
In The Wind Waker, small tree saplings are found scattered across many islands on the Great Sea and in several dungeons, where they may either be used for effect or act as barriers; these thin, young trees can easily be felled with a single swipe from a sword. Each year, the Great Deku Tree would send off some of the Koroks to plant trees all throughout the islands. This was done in the hope that, as the forests spread and the trees grew, they would consolidate the remaining land above the Great Sea, and allow some of the land lost during the Great Flood to be reclaimed from the depths. The height locations the Koroks chose to plant the Great Deku Tree's seeds are Shark Island, Eastern Fairy Island, Star Island, Needle Rock Isle, Cliff Plateau Isles, Private Oasis, Greatfish Isle, and Mother and Child Isles.
Four Swords Adventures contains trees that require the teamwork of all four Links to move or even lift to unblock paths. The Minish Cap utilized several trees as entrances to usually small underground rooms. Dashing into certain trees occasionally knocks loose Rupees, Fairies, or Kinstones.
Notable Trees
- Deku Tree
- Baga Tree
- Maku Tree
- Eagle Labyrinth's and Gnarled Root Dungeon's entrances can be found inside of a hollowed tree.
Tree Stump
In A Link to the Past, Link sees an apparition of the Flute Boy playing the Flute on a stump for the woodland animals of the Haunted Grove. The Twin Lumberjacks, A. Bumpkin and B. Bumpkin, can be found cutting a large tree saying that they can feel something odd about it. Later on in the game, if Link charges into it with the Pegasus Boots, a stump with a hole will appear.
In Ocarina of Time, there is many stumps in the the Lost Woods where Skull Kids play flutes.
In Oracle of Ages, Nayru can be seen seated on a stump at the beginning of the game, singing for Ralph, a kid, and animals. In Oracle of Seasons, the holder of the Rod of Seasons must stand on a tree stump and then swinging the rod to cause the seasons to change. At the beginning of the game, Din can be seen dancing on one of the stumps.
In The Minish Cap, trunk portals are one of the most common Minish Portal types in the overworld, and are found in most areas. These portals allow Link, with Ezlo, to turn into a Minish-sized person. Minish Portals can also be used to make Minish Link normal size again.
