Smotherwing Butterflies can be found in areas of Death Mountain and Eldin Canyon with Scorching Climates, often on the edges of lava lakes. Beedle also sells them at East Akkala Stable and Wetland Stable. Using one in a Cooking Pot with Monster Parts will result in a Fireproof Elixir, which will grant Link a temporary resistance to Scorching Climates.[1] They can also be used at the Kochi Dye Shop as an ingredient to make Gray Dye.

When upgrading Fireproof Armor at a Great Fairy Fountain, three Smotherwing Butterflies and three Moblin Guts are needed to upgrade each piece to its third tier. In addition, five Smotherwing Butterflies and two Hinox Guts are needed to upgrade each piece to its final tier.

Trivia

  • In Tears of the Kingdom, Beedle says that the scientific name (i.e. binomial nomenclature) for the Smotherwing Butterfly is Papilio vulcensis.[4] Papilio is a real genus of swallowtail butterflies which means "butterfly" in Latin, while the fictional specific name vulcensis appears to be derived from vulcano ("volcano") and -ensis, a suffix indicating a place of origin. However, the proper term as used in some real-life specific names would be vulcanensis.
