"Tears of the Dragon" is a Memory in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]
Overview
"Tears of the Dragon" is the final Dragon's Tear that Link can view. After finding all 11 other Tears, the Light Dragon will roar from above Link, shedding another Tear that lands on the tip of Rist Peninsula.[2] Witnessing this Memory is the final step for completing "The Dragon's Tears" Main Quest.
Behind the Temple of Time, Zelda thinks back to "The Awakening", remembering how Demon King Ganondorf taunted the Master Sword after being cut by one of its shards.[3] She also remembers the Great Deku Tree's explanation of the Master Sword's strength from "The Master Sword's Power",[4] Sonia acknowledging her Light and Time powers from "Zelda and Sonia",[5] and Mineru's story about draconification from "Mineru's Counsel".[6] Zelda tells Mineru's Spirit that she is counting on her, and which point she imparts herself into the Purah Pad.[7] Zelda then hands the Purah Pad to a nearby Steward Construct for safekeeping.
Looking down at the Decayed Master Sword on the pedestal in front of her, Zelda promises to restore it for Link and empower it until it becomes strong enough to defeat Demon King Ganondorf.[8] Removing her Secret Stone from her necklace, Zelda remembers that the process of draconification will cause her to lose all facets of her identity.[9] She whispers a command to Link before swallowing the Secret Stone.[10] Clouds cover the Sky, and for a moment, nothing happens. Then, Light erupts from Zelda, and she grabs the Decayed Master Sword to hold to her chest. As her transformation begins, Zelda wishes for Link to protect everyone.[11]
As a hemisphere of Light grows, the Light Dragon emerges and flies upward towards the Sky. She begins to cry, shedding the 11 Dragon's Tears throughout Hyrule. Once she passes through the clouds and disappears, the sun begins to shine, and the Sage of Water, Sage of Fire, Sage of Wind, and Sage of Lightning can be seen watching from afar. At this point, the Memory will end.
Trivia
- In the background, a Shrine of Light can be seen in the same position as the Owa Daim Shrine from Breath of the Wild. During the events of Tears of the Kingdom, the Great Plateau South Chasm is found there.
- The cliff that the Sages watch the Light Dragon fly away from is the same one Link stands on after exiting the Shrine of Resurrection in Breath of the Wild. Zelda also looks over Hyrule from this cliff during the "An Unfamiliar World" Memory.
- The shot of Zelda holding her Secret Stone from "Tears of the Dragon" can be seen in the April 2023 trailer for Tears of the Kingdom.[12]
