Features and Overview

Ocarina of Time

The Kokiri Forest is located on the eastern section of Hyrule within the Lost Woods, with Hyrule Field to the west and Zora's Fountain to the north. It serves as the home of the Kokiri tribe as well as its guardian spirit, the Great Deku Tree.[3] The Kokiri Forest is known to be the source of life, maintaining the order of the world and deterring outsiders from ever entering the so-called forbidden forest.[4][5] The Forest serves as Link's hometown.

The village and Forest region comprises the central part of the Lost Woods. It is located in the southeastern region of Hyrule and it is accessed through the Lost Woods by crossing a small bridge. It is said that no Kokiri can ever leave the woods, or they will die.[6] The Kokiri Forest itself is a pleasant village filled with tree-houses. There is a Training Center in the northern section of the Forest, where it is said the Kokiri Sword lies hidden. There is also a Shop which sells Deku Shields, among other things.

The Kokiri Forest is actually home to the Great Deku Tree's meadow and is a safe haven, compared to the rest of the Lost Woods. The entrance into the Lost Woods is found on a cliff overlooking the Kokiri Forest village. It is also through the Lost Woods that the Sacred Forest Meadow can ultimately be reached.

It is in this small village that young Link starts his adventure in Ocarina of Time. After venturing inside the Great Deku Tree to save him from Queen Gohma, the Great Deku Tree withers and dies. Seven years later, upon retrieving the Master Sword from its Pedestal, Link must return to the once-peaceful village to find the Forest overrun by monsters such as Deku Babas, Mad Scrubs and Skulltulas, among others. In fear of the monsters, all of the Kokiri decide to take refuge inside their homes. They mention that ever since the Great Deku Tree died, monsters have begun to appear all over the Forest.[7] Link then goes to the Forest Temple to defeat Phantom Ganon in order to break the curse on the temple and awaken Saria as the Sage of the Forest. By doing so, the Deku Tree Sprout is born and the Kokiri Forest returns to normal.

Trivia

  • One aspect that makes the Kokiri Forest (as well as the Lost Woods) unique is the strange particles that float in the air. If Link stays still for a certain length of time, these particles will join together in a single file and move through the air in a fashion similar to Moldorm. When Link moves, however, they burst into individual particles again.
  • Every time Link successfully hops across the slabs in the pond by the shop or across the islets near the Twins' house, he will gain 5 Rupees.
  • If Link chops down the sign near the pond while facing the water, the sign fragments will fall into the water, making a splashing sound, and float. This behavior received special mention in an interview, and is likely an Easter Egg, as to program the splashing and floating, the developers would have had to take extra time to program.
  • The Kokiri Forest exists as the Faron Woods in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword,[8] and as the Forest Haven in The Wind Waker.[9]

Dost thou sense it? The climate of evil descending upon this realm... Malevolent forces even now are mustering to attack our land of Hyrule... For so long, the Kokiri Forest, the source of life, has stood as a barrier, deterring outsiders and maintaining the order of the world...
But...before this tremendous evil, even my power is as nothing... It seems the time has come for the boy without a fairy to begin his journey... The youth whose destiny it is to lead Hyrule to the path of justice and truth...
Navi...go now! Find our young friend and guide him to me... I do not have much time left. Fly, Navi, fly! The fate of the forest, nay, the world, depends upon thee!

  5. Some time ago, before the king of Hyrule unified this country, there was a fierce war in our world. One day, to escape from the fires of the war, a Hylian mother and her baby boy entered this forbidden forest. The mother was gravely injured... Her only choice was to entrust the child to the Deku Tree, the guardian spirit of the forest. The Deku Tree could sense that this was a child of destiny whose fate would affect the entire world, so he took him into the forest. After the mother passed away, the baby was raised as a Kokiri. And now, finally, the day of destiny has come! — Deku Tree Sprout (Ocarina of Time 3D)
