Mercay Village is a location in Phantom Hourglass.[1]

Features and Overview

Mercay Village is a port town located on Mercay Island in the Southwestern Sea of the World of the Ocean King. It was once a vibrant town that was frequented by sailors, but has since lost most of its traffic due to the presence of the Ghost Ship in the surrounding waters.[2]

Link must travel here in order to find Linebeck,[3] a sailor who is said to know about the Ghost Ship and is the only one willing to dock at the Village's port.[4] Initially, a stone bridge connects Mercay Village to the western half of Mercay Island, but it has collapsed because of the frequent earthquakes that plague the Island. People who wish to travel from the west side of the Island to Mercay Village are instead forced to take the Mountain Passage, which exits on the north side of the Village.

Mercay Village is home to several services. The Mercay Island Shop provides general adventure resources and the Treasure Teller trades Treasures for Rupees. Near the port, there is the Shipyard where boats can be repaired. Beside the Shipyard there is a Mailbox, which is where the Postman greets people when they have Letters. Sailors who visit the Village are known to frequent the Mercay Tavern, which serves Milk to adults and is a source of gossip and rumors.[5][6] There is one residential home that is occupied by Ojibe. When Link first arrives, both the Treasure Teller and Shipyard are closed.[7][8] The Treasure Teller is a new Shop that has yet to open to the public and the Shipyard is closed because Gazpacho is busy repairing the broken bridge.[9]

Ojibe can be found in his home, where he asks Link about Astrid, the fortune-teller.[10] He informs Link that the Isle of Ember where she makes her home is revered as a "place of prophetic power".[11] He also muses that because she foresaw the arrival of the Ghost Ship, she may be able to use her powers to help him find a girlfriend.[12]

Doudo can be found fawning over the SS Linebeck at the port.[13] He tells Link that its owner, Linebeck, can usually be found at the Mercay Tavern.[14] However, Linebeck hasn't been seen in days, so he suggests asking the owner of the Tavern where he might be. When asked, Midori reveals that Linebeck took off to the Temple of the Ocean King, which is located on the north side of Mercay Island.[15] Upon overhearing this conversation, Maltza warns Link to stay away from the Temple, as a terrible curse was placed upon it that drains the life from anyone who enters.[16] Midori agrees and tells Link where it is so that he can avoid it.[17][18]

By the time that Linebeck is rescued from the Temple of the Ocean King: 1F, Gazpacho will have fixed the bridge and Saya will enter the town.[19][20]

That ship has pirated the life from many a soul, but some of us still remain... Oh, knock on wood!" — Tuzi (Phantom Hourglass)

  6. "A new customer! Oh, hearty greetings! Lots of locals drift in here to while away the hours! Bit empty at the moment... But aren't you a tad short to be in here? Take no offense, sir. You'll be more than welcome when you've gone a little farther in life!" — Midori (Phantom Hourglass)

"This crummy bridge breaks every time we have a quake! Don't have time to keep babysitting this thing. Not when ships need fixing! But Oshus says that bridges are just as 'portant as ships... 10. "Heard of the fortune-teller, Astrid?" — Ojibe (Phantom Hourglass)
  11. "[Yes] You have? Impressive! You know, that island she's said to live on... We all revere it as a place of prophetic power! I'd sail there too, but not with so many monsters lurking on the seas!" — Ojibe (Phantom Hourglass)

  13. "Look at this remarkable ship! What do you think of it? Oh, just look at her! What a ship! Such a proud beauty! Time loses all meaning when I gaze upon her... Oh, if she were only mine! It belongs to a sea captain what goes by the name of Linebeck. A fearless soul, I hear. He's seen the whole world, yet never seen defeat!" — Doudo (Phantom Hourglass)
  14. "What? You're searching for Linebeck? The captain usually drops anchor at the milk bar, but I haven't seen him in days. Perhaps the bar owner knows where Linebeck has vanished to." — Doudo (Phantom Hourglass)

  16. "Did my ears hear that right?! He went to the Temple of the Ocean King?! Listen up, young 'un. Listen good. The Ocean King is defender of all creation. And that temple up on the hill was built in his honor. None more worthy! Sadly, a curse was laid on the place that sucks the souls from all who enter. None dare step into the Temple of the Ocean King, so put it out of your mind! Can't say where you friend's gone, but I'll tell you this: stay out of there!" — Maltza (Phantom Hourglass)
