Penn is a character in Tears of the Kingdom.[2] He is a Rito working as a reporter for the Lucky Clover Gazette.

Biography

Penn is first encountered at Lookout Landing after activating its Skyview Tower, where he congratulates Link for being the first person to use a Skyview Tower.[3] He informs him that he is a reporter for the Lucky Clover Gazette, writing a story on this event, before returning to the headquarters of the Lucky Clover Gazette.[2] Despite Link's renown, Penn does not realize his identity upon learning his name, believing him to only coincidentally share a name with the legendary swordsman.[4]

Penn is next found in the Lucky Clover Gazette headquarters, the site of the former Rito Stable. Link can talk to Traysi, who will pair them up to investigate the rumored sightings of Princess Zelda, though she decides to continue keeping Link's identity a secret from him.[5] This begins the "Potential Princess Sightings!" Side Adventure, which consists of the following Side Adventures activated by meeting Penn at each Stable:

After all quests are completed, Penn will retire to Washa's Bluff, where a "famous bard" had once "perfected his craft".[6]

Penn can also be found at East Akkala Stable, where he notes there is potential for stories including "a god of horses" and "suspicious events at the nearby laboratory".[7] However, since none of the stories involve sightings of the Princess, he decides to leave.[8] The stable's analogous Side Quest, "The Gathering Pirates", is not part of the "Potential Princess Sightings" Side Adventure and is instead given by the stable worker Aya; however, the quest's internal name of Tribune01 follows the same patterns as those quests, indicating it may have initially been intended to involve Penn and the Lucky Clover Gazette.

Trivia

  • In Japanese, Penn's catchphrase ("Soar long!" in English) is サラバード (sarabādo), which is a pun combining さらばだ (saraba da), an antiquated term meaning "farewell", with バード (bādo), representing the English word "bird".
  • Penn can occasionally be seen lifting his aviator glasses, revealing he has beady black eyes.
  • The Dragon's Blood Tree that Penn retires to (formerly the site where Kass kept his Journal) can also be accessed by Ascending through an Ascend Access Point directly beneath it in the Depths.

Nomenclature

Penn's name is possibly a clipping of "pelican" (in Japanese, ペリカンperikan being simplified to ペーンPēn), the type of bird he resembles. It may also be derived from "pen" as in the writing utensil, as fits his job as a writer for the {Lucky Clover Gazette newspaper.
