Template:Item Bombs are recurring items in The Legend of Zelda series. There are many varieties of Bombs, including Super Bombs, Bomb Flowers, Bombchus, Powder Kegs, Big Bombs, Water Bombs, Bomblings, Nice Bombs and Remote Bombs.

Location and Uses

Bombs are spherical devices used to create explosions. Only seconds after they are set, they will flash red and then explode in a puff of smoke and fire. Like most items in the series that come in quantities, Bombs can often be found in Pots, bushes, Shops and by defeating enemies. Bombs can be used in a variety of ways, such as for blowing up rocks or walls, defeating enemies and solving Puzzles. In some games, Link can find out which walls can be bombed by hitting or tapping them with his sword. Since A Link to the Past, Link can pick up, carry and throw Bombs. In some games, including The Wind Waker, a held or thrown Bomb will cause enemies to run away in terror, making them harder to hit. In Phantom Hourglass, Link can throw Bombs into Gust Geysers to make them explode and blow up obstacles at a higher location.[1] In Skyward Sword, Link can also roll Bombs with an underarm swing and can give the Bomb a spin to control its direction. The Beetle can also be used to pick up and fly with a Bomb to drop it somewhere else. The number of Bombs Link can set down at once varies in each game. In Breath of the Wild, Link uses the Remote Bomb Rune instead of Bombs, which allows him to control when they detonate. Additionally, he can drop them while gliding with the Paraglider.

The Legend of Zelda

Bombs first appear in The Legend of Zelda and can be used to damage certain enemies or reveal hidden passageways in walls within Dungeons and the Overworld.[2] These passageways often create shortcuts in Dungeons and lead to Caves in the Overworld that contain Shops or Old Men. When used, Bombs are placed directly in front of Link and explode shortly after. Bombs can only be obtained in bundles of four by purchasing them in a Shop for 20 Rupees or by defeating enemies.[3] The only enemies that drop Bombs when defeated are blue Octoroks, blue Moblins, red Goriyas, red Darknuts, Vires, Gibdos, red Wizzrobes and blue Lynels. However, sometimes Bombs are rewarded to Link for defeating every enemy in certain rooms within Dungeons. Bombs are needed in order to defeat Dodongos and Link is usually rewarded with Bombs for defeating every Dodongo in a room. Link is always rewarded with Bombs for defeating a Dodongo by Bombing their side and hitting them once with any sword. Link can hold up to 8 Bombs at the start of the game,[4] but can purchase the ability to hold more from two Old Men in Level-5 and Level-7 of the First Quest and Level-4 and Level-8 of the Second Quest.[5] The first upgrade raises Link's Bomb capacity to 12 and the second raises it to a maximum of 16 Bombs. Each upgrade costs 100 Rupees.

In A Link to the Past, Bombs can be obtained either by finding them in objects or Treasure Chests, by defeating enemies or purchasing them in a Shop, such as the Bomb Shop in the Dark World. Here Link can buy 30 Bombs for 100 Rupees.[6] Bombs can be used to damage certain enemies or destroy loose rocks, cracked floors or crumbling walls within Dungeons and the Overworld.[7] When Link uses a Bomb, it is placed in a short distance in front of him and detonates soon after. However, Link can also pick the Bomb up and throw it before it detonates.[8] This allows Link to activate Switches from afar. Bombs are an effective item for defeating Hinoxes, who throw Bombs when Link is nearby, allowing Link to throw their Bombs back at them without using his own Bombs.[9] Link can destroy the Helmasaur King's mask with Five Bombs instead of the Magic Hammer. Certain Trees in the Dark World known as Talking Timbers will shoot a Bomb out of their mouth if Link touches their face.[10] If Link gets hurt by a Bomb, including his own Bombs,[11] he will take one Heart of damage. If he is wearing the Blue Mail, he will instead lose half of a Heart and if he is wearing the Red Mail, he will lose a quarter of a Heart.

Link can carry a total of 10 Bombs initially, but can increase the amount of Bombs he can carry at the Pond of Happiness in Lake Hylia. Every time Link tosses a total of 100 Rupees into the Pond, the Great Fairy Venus emerges to reward him with either an Arrow or Bomb capacity upgrade.[12] If Link chooses to upgrade his Bomb capacity, Venus will grant him the ability to carry 5 more Bombs each time until he can carry 40 Bombs.[13] At 40 Bombs, Link can upgrade one more time, granting him a maximum capacity of 50 Bombs. All of the upgrades cost a total of 700 Rupees. Link can temporarily use a special variety of Bomb called the Super Bomb. After completing the Ice Palace and the Misery Mire, Link can purchase the Super Bomb from the Dark World's Bomb Shop for 100 Rupees.[14] After purchase, Link will carry the Super Bomb with him and it will detonate wherever he places it.

Link's Awakening

In Link's Awakening, Bombs can be obtained in objects or Treasure Chests, by defeating enemies or purchasing them at the Town Tool Shop in Mabe Village. Here Link can buy 10 Bombs for 10 Rupees. Bombs can be used to damage certain enemies and objects or destroy cracked walls within Dungeons and the Overworld. Link can pick up Bombs and they will not detonate until he throws them.[15] Link cannot be hurt by his own Bombs, but he can lose 1 Heart of damage from Bombs used by enemies like Hinoxes, Bombers, Mad Bombers and Bone Putters. In addition, there are Bomb-like enemies known as Bombites. Link needs Bombs in order to defeat Dodongo Snakes. Link can initially carry 20 Bombs, but he can upgrade his carrying capacity to 60 Bombs by sprinkling Magic Powder on an underground altar to awaken the Mad Batter.[16] The Mad Batter then asks Link if he is ready to carry more Bombs.[17] If Link says yes, the Mad Batter will "punish" Link by giving him the Bomb upgrade and does so through a bolt of electricity.[18]

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, Bombs can be obtained in objects or Treasure Chests, by defeating enemies or purchasing them at the Goron Shop in Goron City. Here Link can buy 5 Bombs for 25 Rupees, 10 Bombs for 50 Rupees or 20 Bombs for 80 Rupees. Link cannot use or collect Bombs until he has obtained the Bomb Bag, the main item of Dodongo's Cavern. Link can use Bombs to damage enemies and destroy certain structures, such as walls.[19] When Link uses a Bomb, he will pull one out of his inventory and hold it above his head as the fuse sparks. Link can then place the Bomb down or throw it. The Bomb will detonate after about four seconds, even if Link is still holding it.[20] Link can be hurt by his own Bombs.[21] Several large, yellow rocks can be found across the game which can be destroyed with Bombs. They often conceal Secret Grottos which house Treasure Chests and sometimes Pieces of Heart. If Link has the Shard of Agony,[note 1] he can locate Secret Grottos that are hidden in the ground and can only be accessed by Bombing them open. Bombs are effective for defeating certain enemies, such as Beamos. Bombs are required in order to defeat the Boss of Dodongo's Cavern, King Dodongo. Initially, the Bomb Bag can carry 20 Bombs. However, Link can upgrade it to the Big Bomb Bag, which holds 30 Bombs, and the Biggest Bomb Bag, which holds 40 Bombs. Link can obtain the upgrades by stopping the Hot Rodder Goron in Goron City as a child and by winning it in the Bombchu Bowling Alley Minigame. Link can also use other varieties of Bombs in Ocarina of Time. The Bomb Flower is a plant that appears and functions like a Bomb. Link can detonate Bomb Flowers by either picking them up after obtaining the Goron's Bracelet, setting off another Bomb near them, shooting them with an Arrow or touching them with a burning Deku Stick. The Bomb Flower grows back shortly after being plucked or detonated. Link can also collect Bombchus, which are explosives that move on their own. When Link places them down, they move forward in a jagged line across floors, walls and ceilings and detonate after a certain period of time or after making contact with an object or enemy.

Majora's Mask

In Majora's Mask, Bombs can be obtained within objects or Treasure Chests, by defeating enemies or purchasing them at the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town. Here Link can buy 10 Bombs for 30 Rupees. In order to collect and use Bombs, Link must have a Bomb Bag. Link can obtain a Bomb Bag by purchasing one at the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town for 50 Rupees. Link can carry 20 Bombs with the Bomb Bag, but can obtain the Big Bomb Bag to carry 30 Bombs and the Biggest Bomb Bag to carry 40 Bombs. Link can purchase the Big Bomb Bag for 90 Rupees at the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town after rescuing the Old Lady in North Clock Town from being robbed by Sakon the thief.[22] Alternatively, Link can buy the Big Bomb Bag for 200 Rupees from the Business Scrub in Goron Village while wearing the Goron Mask. To obtain the Biggest Bomb Bag, Link must buy it from this Business Scrub for 200 Rupees while wearing the Goron Mask. Link can use Bombs to damage enemies and destroy certain structures, such as walls.[23] On the Second Day, the Honey and Darling's Shop hosts a Minigame in which Link must successfully throw Bombs into baskets while on a spinning platform. Other varieties of Bombs in Majora's Mask include Bomb Flowers, Bombchus and Powder Kegs. Powder Kegs are a special, powerful type of Bomb that can only be used by Goron Link. They are used to break the giant rocks blocking the path to Romani Ranch and the Goron Racetrack. Link can replicate the effects of Bombs by using the Blast Mask, a Mask which can cause explosions.

Oracle of Seasons

In Oracle of Seasons, Bombs can be obtained within objects like Pots and bushes. Link can find 10 Bombs in the Gnarled Root Dungeon. Bombs can be used to damage certain enemies and destroy cracked walls within Dungeons. Bombs are needed in order to defeat the Dodongo in Snake Remains. Certain Magic Rings affect the function of Bombs when equipped. The Blast Ring, found at the Western Coast, gives Bombs a 25% damage boost. The Peace Ring and the Bombproof Ring, which are found at random either within a Gasha Nut or after bumping into Maple. The Peace Ring prevents Bombs from exploding when Link is carrying them, while the Bombproof Ring makes Link invulnerable to his own Bombs. Link can also obtain the Bomber's Ring through a Linked Game, which allows Link to set two Bombs at the same time. A Bomb Flower also appears in Oracle of Seasons at the Lava Lake in Subrosia. Link can give the Bomb Flower to the Subrosian Smelter to open the path to the Tower of Autumn.

Oracle of Ages

To obtain Bombs in Oracle of Ages, Link must give Queen Ambi Mystery Seeds. She gives Link Bombs as a reward.[24] Bombs can then be obtained within objects like Pots and bushes. Certain Magic Rings affect the function of Bombs when equipped. The Bomber's Ring, obtained as a possible reward for getting a perfect score on the platinum Goron Dance in the past, allows Link to set two Bombs at the same time. The Peace Ring and the Bombproof Ring, which are found at random either within a Gasha Nut or after bumping into Maple. The Bombproof Ring can also be obtained as a possible reward for getting a perfect score on the gold Goron Dance in the present. The Peace Ring prevents Bombs from exploding when Link is carrying them, while the Bombproof Ring makes Link invulnerable to his own Bombs. Link can also obtain the Blast Ring through a Linked Game, which gives Bombs a 25% damage boost. Bomb Flowers also appear in Oracle of Ages as a key plot element. Link uses a Bomb Flower to free the Goron Elder from a heavy boulder in the past. The Gorons then plant Bomb Flowers all around the Rolling Ridge.

Four Swords

In Four Swords, Bombs can be found in various Stages. They can only be used in the Stage where they were obtained. The Links can use an unlimited amount of Bombs.

The Wind Waker

As soon Link receives Bombs in The Wind Waker, he can use the Cannon on the King of Red Lions by simply using the Bomb item while on the boat.[25] The Cannon in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks have an unlimited supply of shots, although they have to be obtained.

A Tingle Bomb is an item provided by the Tingle Tuner at a cost of ten Rupees per use. It can be set wherever the Tingle icon goes onscreen. It is almost like a normal Bomb, but it is invisible, cannot be thrown, and can reveal certain hidden pots and Treasure Chests containing Tingle Statues.[26][27][28] Tingle Bombs can be detonated immediately if the cursor is not on Link, or rooted into place with a three second countdown, which will cause Tingle to warn Link to run. Tingle Bombs are only half as strong as normal Bombs are. A successful hit on an enemy will drop a yellow Rupee, covering the cost of using the Bomb. More successful hits on enemies within the same room will increase the value of the dropped Rupees, from a red Rupee to a purple Rupee. Tingle Bombs can also blow away piles of leaves.

Four Swords Adventures

The Level 2 Bomb, which is exclusive to Four Swords Adventures, is an item upgrade Link can obtain by tossing the Bomb item into a Great Fairy Fountain. These Bombs are larger and have a larger blast radius.[29]

It is not a helpful item, except in Shadow Battle, as its blast can KO a Link instantly if he is in range. Big Bombs are usually dropped by Shadow Link, but they will also appear in chests.[30] It has a 10-second fuse and its explosion affects the entire area. Link can avoid its blast by escaping into a hole,[31] walking into a cave, diving underwater,[32] or leaving the area altogether.[33]

The Minish Cap

First appearing in The Minish Cap, Link can get Remote Bombs from Belari in exchange for his regular Bombs. This can be done after getting the regular Bombs and fusing Kinstones with Gentari, the Minish elder. After being set, these Bombs will explode only when the button to which they are assigned is pressed again. Because of this, it is impossible to set two Remote Bombs at a time. Belari can trade the Remote Bombs back for regular Bombs whenever Link talks to him again.[34] When Link has the Remote Bombs, he will obtain these items the same way as the normal Bombs. Even though Remote Bombs are the first to be referred as such, Bombs in Four Swords can be activated in a similar manner.[35] Bombs are remote by default in Breath of the Wild, and can be detonated at will.

Twilight Princess

In the Snowpeak Ruins in Twilight Princess, there are many cannons that require the insertion of a cannonball and then a Bomb for them to activate. These cannons can blast through thick ice and any enemy in their way.

Water Bombs are special Bombs found only in Twilight Princess that are able to explode underwater, while other Bombs are unable to. They appear to be Bombfish, but the Water Bombs Barnes sells are handmade.[36] Water Bombs are necessary to gain access to and explore the Lakebed Temple. Link must wear the Iron Boots to be able to use them underwater. They can also be used on land, but are much more costly this way compared to regular Bombs.

Bomblings are explosive creatures found in Twilight Princess. While they are just useful enemies at first, they can be added to Link's Bomb inventory later on. As items, they are similar to the Bombchu, except they will not crawl up walls but rather will explode whenever they crash into something.[37] Wild Bomblings, necessary to complete the Forest Temple, spawn from small holes in the ground and will attack Link after taking a brief stance, but will not explode until Link attacks them back. They can be carried around and thrown afar by using the Gale Boomerang.

Bomb Arrows are a combination of both Bombs and Arrows. First appearing in Link's Awakening, Link can shoot them by dropping a Bomb and then shooting it with an Arrow. In Twilight Princess, they can simply be attached to Arrows. They can be fired to create distant blasts in high and low places.[38]

The upgrade can be obtained after collecting at least 10 lost Maiamais and then returning them to Mother Maiamai. The Bombs must be bought from Ravio first in order to upgrade them. Nice Bombs have a larger blast radius and cause more damage than regular Bombs.

Tri Force Heroes

The Big Bomb reappears in Tri Force Heroes. When wearing the Big Bomb Outfit, all Bombs and Bomb Flowers Link uses turn into Big Bombs, which have an increased blast radius and do double damage. Big Bombs also break rocks down two levels, as opposed to a Bomb's one.

Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland

In Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, two types of Bombs appear. The first type, Tingle Bombs, can be concocted by using two Bomb Fruits, two Gelatine and two Explosive Claws. They are stored in Empty Jars. Cauldrons of the concoction exist in Desma's Labyrinth. The second type, Nitro Bombs, are also stored in Empty Jars and are a more powerful version of Tingle Bombs. They are created with Bomb Fruits, three Gelatine and three explosive claws. The recipe is obtained from the Stalfos Pirates' Engineer when their pirate ship is being attacked by insects.

Non-Canon Information

Philips CD-i Games

In The Faces of Evil and The Wand of Gamelon, Bombs are used to damage stronger enemies and to destroy breakable rocks and small walls. They are purchased from Morshu's Shop in The Faces of Evil, and The Merchant's Shop in The Wand of Gamelon. In both games, Bombs are purchased in packs of three for 20 Rubies. Link and Zelda can carry up to 99 of them.

Hyrule Warriors Series

In Hyrule Warriors, Bombs are items kept in the inventory. They are first obtained in "The Armies of Ruin" Scenario, after Link finds them in the field's Mine Entrance. Bombs are thrown in small spurts. They are primarily used to destroy cracked walls and boulders, but can also be used to damage enemies. Some giant bosses, such as King Dodongo, are particularly weak to them and can be used to make their Weak Point Gauge expose. The Bombs can be temporarily upgraded to a giant Bomb by collecting Bomb power ups, which will throw one giant Bomb that clears a large area. Goron's Bracelet Badges in the Bazaar can be crafted to increase the duration of the upgrade.

In Adventure Mode, normal and Water Bombs appear as Item Cards. Normal Bombs are used to open cave entrances in mountain walls and to destroy boulders on land, whereas Water Bombs are used to destroy boulders on bodies of water. In the Lorule Map from Hyrule Warriors Legends, the Bomb Item Card activates the Rupee Nice Power on the Ravio Board when used.

In the A Link Between Worlds DLC Pack for Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends, Ravio uses Bombs at part of the moveset for his Rental Hammer Weapon. He can bat a bomb towards enemies with the Hammer and roll giant Bombs at enemies, shoving it away from him before it explodes.

Oracle of Ages (Himekawa)

When battling Veran's spider form in the Black Tower, Link spies a crate of Bombs from the Tower's construction.[39] Link tosses a Bomb at Veran,[40] momentarily blinding and stunning her.
