Gossip Stones are found in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Phantom Hourglass. These odd little devices do many a senseless thing. When you slash one with your sword it will tell you what time it is, or how much time you have left (that is, if you are playing Majora's Mask). If you place a bomb next to one it will shoot off like a rocket. You can also change the color of the stone this way, when the bomb changes to either blue or red, hit it with your sword. You can smash them into the ground using your Megaton Hammer. By using Din's Fire on one, the Stone will spin around and inexplicably stretch to double its height, soon snapping back to normal. After putting on the Mask of Truth, you will find out why they are called Gossip Stones.  In Phantom Hourglass, they will talk to you without any conditions needing to be met. They might unlock certain challenges.

Gossip Stones provide hints or insight to Link about the surrounding area in PH. Some Gossip Stones reveal hints about a nearby puzzle, while others, specifically those inside Dungeons, reveal how many Treasure Chests are left to discover on that floor at the price of 20 Rupees.<ref>{{Cite|The number of treasure chests left here…is… [var]! On Harrow Island, a Gossip Stone near the dock runs the Digging Game.

In the extra child chapters of the OoT manga, Link activates a Gossip Stone by hitting it, which reveals that Mido still wets his bed and that the Deku Tree is troubled that he cannot scratch his own back.

Gossip Stones have a more feminine appearance in ST. Normally, they are unresponsive even when hit, but if the "Song of Awakening" is played nearby, they will speak. Like in -, Gossip Stones in dungeons reveal the amount of Treasure Chests on the floor they are currently in for a fee of 20 Rupees. Other Gossip Stones appear in several sanctuaries that reveal hints or other useful information. In Lost at Sea Station, there is a Gossip Stone that allows Link to enter the Temple located in said station.

Majora's Mask
When attacked by Link's sword, the screen will shake and the stone will make a high-pitched noise. Then it will tell Link how many more hours there are until the Moon impacts. If you speak to it using the Mask of Truth, it will give you information regarding where to find other masks, or what you can use the other masks for (Example: "They say that the Couple's Mask has the power to silence arguments").
Gossip Stones only appear when Link plays the Goddess's Harp near a flock of Blessed Butterflies in SS. Most of them will give Link advice and a Treasure when he makes them appear. They also react to different actions performed by Link, such as shrinking when the Gust Bellows or Glittering Spores are used on them, or releasing a Green Rupee when shot with the Bow.

A Gossip Stone in Skyloft, named the "Moonlight Merchant," sells rare Treasures for 100 or 200 Rupees, which is usually easier than finding them while adventuring. It can be found inside Waterfall Cave at night, but only after completing the Silent Realm in Skyloft.

Gossip Stones,(OoT | OoT3D | SS)[1] also known as Boing Statues,(PH)[2] and Talking Statues,(SS)[3] are recurring Objects in The Legend of Zelda series. They can tell time, reveal information, give helpful hints, and reveal the location of Treasure Chests. Gossip Stones speak to Link by piercing into his mind.[4]

Location and Uses

Ocarina of Time

If Link hits a Gossip Stone with his Sword in Ocarina of Time, it will show the current in-game time. If he speaks to a stone with the Mask of Truth, it will reveal a secret. If Link sets a Bomb near a Gossip Stone, after exploding, the stone will flash blue and rocket to the sky. Likewise, these stones will spin around when exposed to Din's Fire, and flatten out if hit by the Megaton Hammer. If Link plays "Zelda's Lullaby", the "Sun's Song," or the "Song of Storms" near a Gossip Stone, it will release a Fairy.

Majora's Mask

When a Gossip Stone is attacked by Link's Sword in Majora's Mask, the screen will shake and the stone will make a high-pitched noise. It will then tell Link how many more hours remain until the Moon crashes into Termina. If Link speaks the Gossip Stones scattered all over Termina using the Mask of Truth, they will give him information regarding certain people or places.

Phantom Hourglass

Gossip Stones provide hints or insight to Link about the surrounding area in Phantom Hourglass. Some Gossip Stones reveal hints about a nearby puzzle, while others, specifically those inside Dungeons, reveal how many Treasure Chests are left to discover on that floor at the price of 20 Rupees.[5]

On Harrow Island, a Gossip Stone near the dock runs the Digging Game.

Spirit Tracks

Gossip Stones have a more feminine appearance in Spirit Tracks. Normally, they are unresponsive even when hit, but if the "Song of Awakening" is played nearby, they will speak. Like in Phantom Hourglass, Gossip Stones in dungeons reveal the amount of Treasure Chests on the floor they are currently in for a fee of 20 Rupees. Other Gossip Stones appear in several sanctuaries that reveal hints or other useful information. In Lost at Sea Station, there is a Gossip Stone that allows Link to enter the Temple located in said station.

Skyward Sword

Gossip Stones only appear when Link plays the Goddess's Harp near a flock of Blessed Butterflies in Skyward Sword. Most of them will give Link advice and a Treasure when he makes them appear. They also react to different actions performed by Link, such as shrinking when the Gust Bellows or Glittering Spores are used on them, or releasing a Green Rupee when shot with the Bow.

Main article: Moonlight Merchant

A Gossip Stone in Skyloft, named the "Moonlight Merchant," sells rare Treasures for 100 or 200 Rupees, which is usually easier than finding them while adventuring. It can be found inside Waterfall Cave at night, but only after completing the Silent Realm in Skyloft.

Other Appearances

Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)

In the extra child chapters of the Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa, Link activates a Gossip Stone by hitting it, which reveals that Mido still wets his bed and that the Deku Tree is troubled that he cannot scratch his own back.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Gossip Stones appear in certain mission tiles on the Adventure Mode map. On map tiles with hidden enemies, the Gossip Stone must be revealed before the enemies appear and before the mission can be played. Using a Goddess Harp Item Card on a flock of Goddess Butterflies will make the stone appear, allowing the mission to be selected.

Sonic Lost World

Gossip Stones appear in Sonic Lost World in The Legend of Zelda Zone, where they spawn fairies that heal Sonic when he approaches them. Using the Black Bomb Color Power near them will cause them to flash blue and rocket into the sky, similar to how they behave when a bomb explodes near them in Ocarina of Time.

Trivia

 • In the German translation of Ocarina of Time, a Gossip Stone behind the Great Deku Tree says that something mysterious happens if the reset button is pressed while playing.[6]
