The Search for Princess Zelda is an event in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

The Search for Princess Zelda is the widespread effort by residents of Hyrule to discern the whereabouts of Zelda. At the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, she and Link investigate the emergence of Gloom from Beneath Hyrule Castle.[2][3][4] During this time, they encounter Demon King Ganondorf as he breaks from his seal in the Imprisoning Chamber.[4] As the Chamber begins to crumble, Zelda falls into the Depths.[4] Although Link tries to catch her, he ultimately fails, and she is transported to the Era of Myth with the power of the Secret Stone she previously picked up.[5] Throughout the majority of Tears of the Kingdom, her location remains unknown.

After leaving the Room of Awakening on the Great Sky Island, a Steward Construct gives Link the Purah Pad and informs him that Zelda is waiting for him inside the Temple of Time.[6][7] This starts the Main Quest "Find Princess Zelda".[8] After he is able to enter the Temple, he is able to meet with a ghostly version of Zelda, which Rauru speculates was a manifestation of her will.[9][10] This manifestation grants Link the power of Recall.[9] Once he passes through the Challenge Door at the back of the Temple and the Decayed Master Sword disappears in the Light there, he will hear the voice of Princess Zelda begging him to find her.[11][12]

The figure resembling Zelda

On the Surface of Hyrule, Link can find multiple ongoing efforts relating to the Search for Princess Zelda. Due to the disasters caused by the Upheaval, however, many of the peoples throughout Hyrule have been unable to assist.[13][14] After meeting with Purah at Lookout Landing, he learns that Squad One and Squad Two of the Monster-Control Crew are engaging in a search of Hyrule Castle in an effort to find both Zelda and Link.[15] When he meets with the Squads' leaders, Hoz and Toren, during the Main Quest "Crisis at Hyrule Castle", the group catches sight of a figure resembling Zelda on the other side of the Castle.[16] However, she soon after floats into the air, where she turns into Light and flies away. This confuses Hoz, who decides they need to withdraw and sends Link back to Lookout Landing.[17]

In addition to this investigation, Purah has also asked the staff at the Lucky Clover Gazette to assist in the Search for Princess Zelda, and she asks Link to check in with them to see if he can help.[18] As part of the Side Adventure "Potential Princess Sightings!", Traysi of the Lucky Clover Gazette tasks Link and her writer Penn with investigating rumors relating the Zelda originating from the Stables across Hyrule.[19][20][21] After completing the Side Adventures at each Stable, Link is able to uncover the truth behind these rumors, though they do not reveal any information pertaining to Zelda's whereabouts.[22]

When Purah hears about the sighting of Zelda at Hyrule Castle, she directs Link to investigate the major disasters in Hebra, Eldin, Lanayru, and Gerudo caused by the Upheaval, believing they could lead to clues about where Zelda is.[23] This leads to the Main Quest "Regional Phenomena". While addressing these disasters, Link will once again run into the individual that resembles Zelda, but he is never able to interact with her. During the Main Quest "Tulin of Rito Village", Tulin claims to have seen her near Hebra Peak on the Rising Island Chain, and she is later spotted on the deck of the Wind Temple.[24][25] Prior to visiting Goron City, this individual gave Yunobo the Weird Mask to wear, which influenced him to start mining Marbled Rock Roasts.[26][27] During "Yunobo of Goron City", she is seen in YunoboCo Storage, although they lose track of her after a cave-in of Gloom Rocks.[28] She also appears at the edge of the Death Mountain Crater and outside the Fire Temple.[29][30] Inside the Fire Temple, she appears to be captured by Marbled Gohma, but she is nowhere to be found after defeating it.[31][32][33] After tracking down Dorephan during the Main Quest "Sidon of the Zora", he reveals that Zelda used a Sludge Like to attack him, which left him injured.[34] Lastly, during "Riju of Gerudo Town", she can be seen disappearing into the Sand Shroud after the defense of Kara Kara Bazaar.[35] She can briefly be seen next to the Battery that emerges from the Sand on Dragon's Exile.[36]

The Sage of Time

After completing the Dungeons associated with each of these Main Quests, an ancient Sage will appear before Link and his companion to tell them the story of the Imprisoning War.[37][38][39][40] These flashbacks feature the Sage of Time, who appears to be Zelda.[41][42][43][44] In addition, at the end of these Quests, the Rito, Gorons, Zora, and Gerudo will pledge to continue the Search for Princess Zelda in their respective Regions.[45][46]

Upon Link's return to Lookout Landing, Zelda is sighted on the floating portion of Hyrule Castle.[47] As a result, Purah sends Link to look for her.[48] The figure resembling Zelda beckons Link throughout Hyrule Castle, where he is repeatedly attacked by Monster Forces.[49] Eventually, Link is lead to the Throne Room, where the figure is revealed to be a Phantom Ganon under the control of Demon King Ganondorf.[50][51] After Link defeats the Phantom, Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon, and Riju arrive to defend him from Ganondorf.[52] When Ganondorf flees, they regroup at Lookout Landing, where Purah determines that the Zelda that has been causing trouble throughout Hyrule was not the real one.[53] In addition, they are certain that the Sage of Time they saw in their visions was the actual Zelda, who made preparations for the Demon King's revival in their era.[54]

During the Main Quests "Impa and the Geoglyphs" and "The Dragon's Tears", Link finds a total of 12 Dragon's Tears.[55] Through the power of Recall, he is able to view the Memories associated with these Tears, which show him glimpses of Zelda's time in the Era of Myth. after Rauru sacrificed himself to seal Demon King Ganondorf during the Imprisoning War, Zelda was concerned that Link would be unable to defeat him in the future.[56] Behind the Temple of Time, the Decayed Master Sword appeared before her, having traveled through Time to recover its strength with her.[57] At that moment, Zelda realizes that there is something she can do to help Link.[58] After finishing her preparations, Zelda swallowed her Secret Stone.[59] This transformed her into the Light Dragon, turning her into an immortal Dragon by sacrificing her sense of self.[59] By spending centuries absorbing her sacred Light power, Zelda planned to restore and empower the Master Sword.[60] In the modern era, the Light Dragon can be found flying through the Sky above Hyrule, with the revitalized Master Sword embedded in her head.[61]

  2. People have been falling ill after coming into contact with the gloom drifting through these caverns. Though here it seems almost misty and not concentrated enough to harm us... We'll keep going. With it coming up from beneath Hyrule Castle... We do not know what waits below, so we need to be ready for anything. But I know I'll be OK with you, Link. — Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  3. A stairway leading deep beneath Hyrule Castle has been discovered. Even Princess Zelda didn't know about it, so it seems safe to assume it's a secret removed even from royal legend. We have confirmed that gloom emanates from that location, meaning something down there must be causing it. I appointed Princess Zelda and Link to investigate. Actually... It would be more accurate to say that Princess Zelda volunteered for the job before I had the chance. I know beyond a doubt there is no team more qualified for such a task, and yet... I can't escape this feeling of dread. — Purah's Diary (Tears of the Kingdom)

  9. 9.0 9.1 In the Temple of Time, you approached an altar, and in a flash of light, you found yourself with Princess Zelda. That is, with some phantasmal floating vision of her.

She took your hand and gave you an ability to control time that's known as Recall. Now, the temple's deeper mysteries await you.
    — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. Ah, Recall...the ability to reverse the movement of an object through time. And Zelda has vanished as well... What you just saw... It's a mystery even to me. Perhaps it was a sort of echo—one that reflects her sheer will. — Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  11. Link... Link... You must find me. — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  12. You didn't find Princess Zelda on the sky island where you awoke. When you touched the light in the Temple of Time, you felt her presence, however faintly, as a voice rang out in your mind: "Link, you must find me."

Where is Princess Zelda? Was there anything more she was trying to tell you?
    — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. If Princess Zelda's disappearance and the strange phenomena around the world are related somehow... Hm. We Rito would ordinarily love to contribute to your search. But this abnormal blizzard shows no sign of stopping, and food has grown scarce. Everyone I could spare is already out researching the blizzard or scavenging for food. — Teba (Tears of the Kingdom)
  14. The sand shroud settled on us some time ago. We sent out patrols to determine what was causing it, but... A swarm of monsters—creatures called Gibdos—suddenly appeared, attacked our troops, and forced us to retreat. The Gibdos have even made their way into the town. As a result, everyone was evacuated to this shelter for their safety. As someone charged with protecting Gerudo Town, I am ashamed at our current situation. This is all to say that, although I wish I could help you search for the princess, now is...not a good time. I'm sorry. — Buliara (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. That settles it. I know you only just returned, Link... But I need you to meet with the search party up by Hyrule Castle. They've been searching tirelessly for you two. The captain in charge of the search is named Hoz. Work with him to find the princess as quickly as you can. I know that mummy may still be lurking somewhere around there. Which is concerning, to say the least, but we have more immediate problems to deal with right now. I'm counting on you, Linky! — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. CAPTAIN! It's Princess Zelda! — Toren (Tears of the Kingdom)
Princess Zelda! She's safe! — Hoz (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. Wait... What... You saw that, too, Link? You saw Princess Zelda turn into light and...fly off...right? How strange... This... This is an emergency situation! Why would she leave without saying a word to us... We need to let Purah know about this as soon as possible! Considering what we just witnessed, I think it makes sense for us to withdraw, but it will take a bit. Please, you must tell Purah about what happened here as soon as possible. — Hoz (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. Oh, and before I forget, Link. We've asked the Lucky Clover Gazette to help us in the search for Princess Zelda. There's nobody who knows more about the goings-on in Hyrule than them. You can find them near the entrance to Rito Village. If you do go there, you should speak with the editor. I'm sure she could help out in some way too. — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. Well, coming here was a great call! What I mean is, we're getting tips from all over Hyrule. So many, in fact, that it's been hard to keep up! And among those tips, we've been hearing about someone who looks like the princess appearing in all sorts of places. I was about to assign Penn to chase those leads, but he could use a partner. I won't tell Penn who you are. It's better if no one knows you're involved. What do you say? Think you could work with him as we investigate? Of course, I wouldn't ask you to do this for free—though that'd be nice. Wait just a second. I'm going to get you a little incentive from the back. — Traysi (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. All right, you two. Here's what you're going to do—visit every stable for leads. Penn, you'll head this up. Stables bring in people, and people bring details. And details are what we need. Now...get me some news! — Traysi (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. The newspaper editor Traysi says that people all over Hyrule have been seeing someone who might be Princess Zelda.

She wants you and Penn to dig up whatever newsy details you can find by visiting stables.
    — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. You returned to the Lucky Clover Gazette and checked in with Traysi. She was relieved to learn the real stories behind the rumors related to Princess Zelda.

The Lucky Clover Gazette will continue to report on events happening in the world. If you come upon a newspaper, be sure to check it out.

  23. Right! Let's talk about the Upheaval. It's affected more than just the castle. Reports of other strange phenomena have been coming in from all over Hyrule. Let's take a look at your map. The first report comes from Hebra to the northwest. Next up is Eldin to the northeast. The Gerudo are reporting trouble in the southwest. And finally, there's Lanayru to the east. The strange phenomena are concentrated in these four regions. I can't say for certain, but... I've got a nagging suspicion that we might find out more about Princess Zelda by looking into these phenomena. — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. Oh, yeah, funny story about that! There was this whole thing with Princess Zelda. I spotted her getting attacked by a monster. It was such a surprise that I dropped my guard and it stole my bow. But I guess she was fine, because then she zoomed up above that cloud. — Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. Oh yeah! Didn't I see someone here a minute ago? Weird... I could swear they were just here... — Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. Yeah. President Yunobo said he got that weird mask he's wearing from the lady too. — Offrak (Tears of the Kingdom)
He was always so nice, but as soon as he started wearing it, he got real mean... — Slergo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. Slergo, Offrak... I don't understand... Everything's a blur ever since I put on the mask from Princess Zelda. I need to talk to her. Maybe she can tell me what the story is... Hey, where is she, anyway? — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  28. Hey, it's you again! — Offrak (Tears of the Kingdom)
The one who knows President Yunobo! — Slergo (Tears of the Kingdom)
He's talking about marbled rock roast with the blond lady right now. No one's allowed to come in. — Offrak (Tears of the Kingdom)
  29. There she is! Princess! Princess Zelda, we need to talk to you! It's dangerous... — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  30. Ah! It's Princess Zelda! Please wait, goro! I gotta talk to ya! — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  31. It's Zelda, goro! — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  32. Not good, not good! Princess Zelda is stuck inside there! We gotta hurry and help her! But how do we get in there...goro? — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. Now that I think about it, it seemed like she was walking toward that giant monster by choice. After that, we didn't see her again. — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. "Link. I will now tell you what happened when we last saw Princess Zelda... As well as the reason behind my seclusion here in the Pristine Sanctum. We encountered Princess Zelda just after Hyrule Castle ascended into the sky. Floating islands appeared as if from nowhere...sludge and fragments of ruins began raining down... Muzu and I had left the domain to investigate these strange occurrences. That is when it happened. Princess Zelda descended from the sky accompanied by a sludge monster. What happened next took us by surprise... She then unleashed the beast upon us. — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
King Dorephan valiantly vanquished the threat. However... He was gravely injured by the sludge during the battle... As for Princess Zelda, she vanished without a trace. If word got out that Princess Zelda lost her mind and harmed the Zora king... The resulting turmoil would be devastating. That is why were are temporarily remaining hidden within the Pristine Sanctum. — Muzu (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. Is that Zelda?! — Riju (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. It cannot be a coincidence that we've seen someone who looked like Zelda twice... But a mystery for another time. — Riju (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. This is a lot to learn all of a sudden, I know. But listen while I tell you what happened in the past. A tale of the Imprisoning War and the mission our people must accomplish! — Sage of Wind (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. Hah, so this is the first you've heard of any of this... Then listen carefully to what I have to say. Let me tell you about the Imprisoning War and the duty of our people. — Sage of Fire (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. Yes. And it is important you know more about the stone and the Demon King. So listen closely to what I have to say. It concerns the Imprisoning War and the destiny of our people. — Sage of Water (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. Let me tell you of events in our distant past. The events that shaped our people's destiny—during the Imprisoning War. — Sage of Lightning (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. Hey, Link? That woman in the vision my ancestor showed us...didn't she look just like Princess Zelda to you? — Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. No way! Hang on. Come to think of it, my ancestor was talking about the Sage of Time... And that sage looked a whole lot like Princess Zelda. So maybe she IS the real Zelda! — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  43. As for the Princess Zelda who appeared in the domain and attacked Father... Could it be that the princess we saw in my ancestor's era and the one my father saw in this era are not one and the same? — Sidon (Tears of the Kingdom)
  44. Actually, Buliara... I do have a small piece of information regarding Zelda. I experienced a vision when I took the secret stone in my hand. The person that my ancestor referred to as the Sage of Time looked identical to Zelda. — Riju (Tears of the Kingdom)
  45. I'll ask my guys at YunoboCo to search the area around the city for any leads on the princess. — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  46. I'm sorry, Link. Although the threat of the sand shroud and the Gibdos has passed... I cannot leave Gerudo Town at the moment. Things need some time to settle. However, we will take on the task of searching this area for any signs of Zelda. — Riju (Tears of the Kingdom)
  47. Linky! Did you SEE that?! I was going to share that I saw a figure that looked an awful lot like Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle! I wasn't sure at first, but now I am. I thought she'd left the castle entirely, but she was inside! — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  48. We have to hurry and rescue her! The soldiers and I can't reach Hyrule Castle as it is now. You might be the only one who can do it. Ugh, I'm sorry, Link. I know I'm always throwing you into dangerous situations. But you really are the only one up to the task. Please, come back in one piece. That applies to both you and the princess. Got it? — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  49. Link... Link... Come to me... I am waiting... Waiting for you... — Phantom Ganon (Tears of the Kingdom)
  50. Link... I am waiting... Waiting... Waiting for you... — Phantom Ganon (Tears of the Kingdom)
  51. At last... I have been waiting for you to arrive. Now, Link... There is something here I want to show you. What do you think? Hyrule Castle. Perfect and glorious. Does it awaken memories? Memories of our time here? Well, really take in every detail... After all, this place... will be the last thing you ever see. — Phantom Ganon (Tears of the Kingdom)
The fabled swordsman who endured my corruption... Who has persisted in slaughtering my servants... Interesting... How is it that you survived my attack? It must have been that wretched arm. No matter. You will not live to see another sunrise. Did my puppet entertain you? She made it so easy to mislead you—to keep you occupied... But such an indirect approach is no longer needed. End this hero's life, my dark servant. Cut him down. — Demon King Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  52. Link! We are here! — Sidon (Tears of the Kingdom)
  53. I seeee. So, to summarize... There's no mistaking that what you all saw at Hyrule Castle was the Demon King from the legend of the Imprisoning War. And the princess you've been seeing was actually an impostor! And the reason she appeared at Hyrule Castle was so the Demon King could lure Link into a trap... — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  54. So, then, that means that Princess Zelda isn't actually here? Instead, she's in the distant past and not in the present... Right? — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
Yes, we should consider that to be the case, bizarre as it sounds. It also seems that Princess Zelda was trying to somehow defeat the Demon King in the past... — Sidon (Tears of the Kingdom)
Our ancestors made a vow to Zelda... They swore that when the Demon King was revived, their descendants would awaken as sages and fight alongside Link. — Riju (Tears of the Kingdom)
  55. Inside the Forgotten Temple is a map of Hyrule and 11 murals related to the geoglyphs. It seems that these geoglyphs appeared in various places after the Upheaval when Princess Zelda went missing.

You have 10 geoglyphs left to investigate.
    — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
  56. We managed to restrain him somehow... But, Link... I am not sure you'll be able to stop him. — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  57. The Master Sword... How is...the Master Sword... You're telling me...that Link is safe? You traveled through time to find me and recover your strength. — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)

  59. 59.0 59.1 After leaving the Purah Pad in Mineru's care, Zelda swallows the secret stone, holding a hope for Link's future in her heart. As bright light washes over her, Zelda transforms into the Light Dragon, roaring as she ascends into the sky. Tears fall from her eyes and rain from the heavens as the Light Dragon vanishes into an expanse of clouds. — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
  60. Link. I will restore the Master Sword for you. I will care for it until the time comes. I will pour my sacred power into it. It will be the weapon that defeats the Demon King! — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  61. You found the Master Sword with the white dragon soaring the skies. The legendary sword that seals the darkness has returned to your hand, along with Zelda's wish. — Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom)
