Location and Uses
Small Keys are commonly found inside Dungeons, with most being rewarded after completing a puzzle. Each Small Key can be used to permanently unlock one Locked Door. In every game except for The Legend of Zelda, they can only be used in the Dungeons where they are found.[9]
The Legend of Zelda
Descriptions
Keys can be purchased from Merchants and used in any Dungeon in The Legend of Zelda.
The following is a count of Keys that can be obtained in The Legend of Zelda:

The Adventure of Link
Bosses other than Link's Shadow drop Keys upon defeat, even when they are not the the Boss of the whole Palace. Consequently, the Palace on the Sea has one more Small Key in the Famicom Disc System version. Since Link is expected to have the Magical Key prior to entering Three-Eye Rock Palace, this is the only source of Keys in Three-Eye Rock Palace and Great Palace.

Keys and Doors
If rooms are divided by a locked door, you will need that door's key. There are two types of keys, small keys and big keys. Small keys can only be used once, but the big key can be used as many times as you like. (The keys on one dungeon cannot be used in another dungeon). On top of all this, there are dead-end doors and doors that can only be opened by switches.

Link's Awakening
Descriptions
The Compass is able to reveal the location of Small Keys in Link's Awakening, with a tone sounding upon entering a room containing a hidden Small Key.[10] In Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch, an icon of the Compass also appears on-screen when this happens.

Small Keys and Doors
Use small keys to open locked doors. The number of small keys in your inventory appears on the game screen. Once you use a small key, it wil disappear. You can only use small keys in the dungeon sections where you find them. There are also one-way doors that only open when you solve the mystery in that room.
Small keys do not appear in the dungeons that you visit at the beginning of the game.
The number of Small Keys in Ocarina of Time varies in Master Quest.

Four Swords Adventures
Small Keys appear as Objects that can be picked up, like Pots. The Links must carry Small Keys to their keyholes,[11] but they will drop them if damaged. If a Small Key falls into a pit, Quicksand, or Water, it will reappear in its initial spot. Some Enemies, such as Karat Crab, will attempt to take Small Keys from the Links, in which case they must be defeated, stunned, or avoided in order to progress.
The Minish Cap
Descriptions
Small Keys are found within Dungeons in The Minish Cap. Some are found in Treasure Chests, while others simply drop from the ceiling after completing a puzzle or defeating Enemies. Three Small Keys are acquired in unique ways. One in the Temple of Droplets has been frozen into a Key-sicle and must be thawed out by Light Beams. The first Small Key in the Royal Crypt is being visibly held by a Gibdo. Lastly, the first Small Key in Dark Hyrule Castle is given to Link after he breaks the Sorcerer's Curse on King Daltus with the Four Sword.
Small Keys are used to open Locked Doors and Locked Blocks in Dungeons. When a Small Key is used on a Locked Door, it is removed from Link's Inventory. He can hold multiple Small Keys, but they can only be used in the Dungeons in which they are obtained.
The following is a count of Small Keys that can be obtained in The Minish Cap:

Twilight Princess
Small Keys are mainly found within Dungeons in Twilight Princess. For the first time in the series, several Small Keys are obtained outside of Dungeons; these are used for unlocking Gates in the outdoors of Hyrule. One can be found inside a Cave in N. Faron Woods and unlocks a Gate leading toward the Forest Temple, while another is given to Link by Coro and unlocks a Gate from S. Faron Woods to Hyrule Field. When Link defeats King Bulblin in a joust on the Great Hylian Bridge, the enemy drops the Gate Keys, which count as two Small Keys used for unlocking a pair of Gates on the path through Hyrule Field toward Kakariko Village.[12] One more Small Key is found in the Bulblin Encampment guarding the Arbiter's Grounds, and is used to enter the hut where King Bulblin is battled once again.

Small Keys appear as Objects that can be picked up, like Pots. The Links must carry the Small Key to their keyholes, though they will drop them if damaged. If a Small Key falls into a pit, Quicksand, or Water, it will reappear in its initial spot. Some Enemies, such as Key Bandit Poes, will attempt to take Small Keys from the Links, in which case they must be defeated, stunned, or avoided in order to progress.
Breath of the Wild
Small Keys appear exclusively in Ancient Shrines in Breath of the Wild. They are made from Sheikah Ancient Technology and glow with an orange light. While Ancient Technology is normally composed of non-magnetic materials, Small Keys are made from a metal that can be manipulated with Magnesis.
Tears of the Kingdom
Small Keys appear inside Shrines of Light and are used to open Locked Door.
Echoes of Wisdom
Small Keys are found inside every major Dungeon except Jabul Ruins and Null's Body.
