Scaldera
Template:Boss Pyroclastic Fiend: Scaldera is a boss that inhabits the Earth Temple in Skyward Sword. It appears to be a large, six legged insect-like creature, hosting a molten body with a single eyeball. To protect its weak inner layer, Scaldera hosts a rough, rocky, armor-like outer layer.
Strategy
When Link progresses through the room, he will encounter Ghirahim, who explains his intentions to Link. In order to release his anger, he attempts to crush Link with a boulder, which then transforms into Scaldera and engages Link in battle.
When the battle begins, Link must run to the end of the platform. Scaldera will then shoot large fireballs at Link. Link can avoid this by moving to the side. He can also restock on Bombs here. Next Scaldera will dash toward Link but instead blow up a Bomb and roll back down the bridge. Link must dash after it, and when Scaldera gets back up, it will suck up energy so it can shoot fireballs. Link needs to throw or roll a Bomb into its mouth. The Bomb will explode inside Scaldera and it will lose some of its rocky exterior. It will then fall on the ground and Link must slash at its eye, which was originally concealed by the aforementioned exterior. Once the eye has been exposed, it is also possible to attack it while Scaldera is moving, provided it is not currently on fire, but it requires excellent timing. Successfully landing an attack on Scaldera's eye while it is moving drops it on its belly in the same way that feeding it a Bomb does.
Soon Scaldera will develop, and begin dashing a little at a time, shooting fireballs in between, until it is all the way to the end of the bridge. It will then roll back down the bridge and the fight continues normally. Later, Scaldera's fireballs will curve toward Link, but this can be avoided by staying in the middle of the side. Eventually, it will begin rolling all the way to the other end of the bridge. When Link comes near, Scaldera will walk over the young hero and roll toward him. Link can then walk to the side of it and continue the battle normally.
Trivia
- Scaldera bears similarities with Rocktites, namely their rocky exterior and large eyes.
Etymology
Scaldera's name is a portmanteau of "Scald," which means burn, and "Caldera," which is a volcanic crater.
