Gyorg (Boss)

Template:Boss Gargantuan Masked Fish: Gyorg (Pronounced /ɡjɔːɹɡ/, gyorg) is the third boss in Majora's Mask, located in the Great Bay Temple.^[1] It appears in the form of a giant fish. It is Gyorg who imprisoned the third of the Four Giants. Without its guardian deity, the waters of the Great Bay Coast become polluted and dangerous.^[2]^[3] This also causes an abnormal climate shift in the Great Bay area.^[4]

Strategy

After Link jumps down a hole in the boss room, he lands on a raised, octagonal-shaped platform surrounded by water. The camera switches to the view of a creature lurking in the water, which notices Link's presence and makes its move. It speeds towards the platform, jumps out of the water, and is revealed as the Gargantuan Masked Fish: Gyorg.

Gyorg will attempt to knock Link off the platform by ramming into it. Therefore, it is wise for Link to stay in the middle of the platform when Gyorg attacks. If Link falls into the water and gets too close to Gyorg, Gyorg will swallow him, then spit him out, causing damage. Occasionally, Gyorg will leap out of the water and soar across the platform to hit Link. When Gyorg is about to attack, a rushing sound can be heard. Bubbles will also appear above him, allowing Link to anticipate Gyorg's attacks.

Partway through the battle, Gyorg will spawn smaller fish to harm Link in the water. These creatures, although weak, can be very aggravating. If Link falls in the water, they will sense him immediately, no matter where they were in the water previous to his descent. This, and their persistence, makes them a deadly, although annoying enemy. The greatest threat to them is a blast from Zora Link's electric barrier.

To defeat Gyorg, Link must use either his Arrows or his Boomerang-fins in Zora form to stun him. He must then dive in the water to attack Gyorg; Zora Link's electrical barrier is particularly effective at this stage. Alternatively, Zora Link can stun Gyorg in the water using his fins or his electrical attack. Gyorg is also vulnerable to Fierce Deity's powerful Energy Beam: one shot stuns him, and another damages him. Once Gyorg is defeated, the Giant who was imprisoned in Gyorg's body will be freed,^[5] returning the Great Bay Coast to normal.^[6]^[7] Link also receives Gyorg's Remains, and, of course, a Heart Container.

The Minish Cap

A similar boss called the Gyorg Pair also makes an appearance in The Minish Cap. It is arguably the largest boss in the game, appearing in the form of a large, red manta ray, surrounded by smaller, yet identical rays of blue coloration. Link, at this time, has obtained the power to split into three forms, and upon reaching the Gyorg Pair atop the Palace of Winds, he must locate and annihilate the open eyes of the main ray, while avoiding it's attacks and interference by the smaller manta ray Gyorgs. Other than their names and the fact that they are both fish, the Gyorg Pair bears no similarities whatsoever to the Gyorg of Majora's Mask.

Trivia

Gyorg's name may come from the Japanese word Gyo, meaning fish.
Gyorg can be stunned with every weapon, including a pot.
The boss's intro cutscene is similar to that of Morpha from Ocarina of Time.
