The Door of Time, located within the Temple of Time, is the powerful barrier that blocks access to the Pedestal of Time. The Master Sword, which is the key to entering the Sacred Realm, rests in this pedestal.
After OoT3D reawakens seven years later, OoT3D begins to watch him in the hopes that the fugitive OoT3D will reveal herself. OoT3D disguises herself as a young OoT3D man named OoT3D, who meets with OoT3D inside the OoT3D to help guide him to the various OoT3D across OoT3D. OoT3D also teaches OoT3D the "OoT3D" in the OoT3D after he frees the OoT3D from the OoT3D.

The door can only be opened by bringing together three Spiritual Stones: the Kokiri's Emerald, the Goron's Ruby, and the Zora's Sapphire. When these three stones are brought together and the Song of Time is played with the Ocarina of Time at the altar, the door slides open and the path to the legendary blade is revealed.
Eventually, OoT3D awakens the remaining members of the OoT3D and returns to the OoT3D where OoT3D reveals his identity as the itinerant OoT3D, the leader of the OoT3D. She does this to draw OoT3D into the OoT3D where the three wielders of the OoT3D would do battle. To help OoT3D in his destined fight against OoT3D, she gives him the OoT3D. However, OoT3D quickly learns of her presence and traps her within a magic crystal, stealing her away to his and beckoning OoT3D to face him.

According to Princess Zelda, the Door of Time is, effectively, an obstacle to the Sacred Realm put in place when the Triforce was sealed away in the Temple of Light. At the end of Ocarina of Time, after Link and Princess Zelda seal away Ganondorf in the void of the Evil Realm, Princess Zelda asks that Link return the Master Sword to its pedestal and close the Door of Time, at which point the "road between times will be closed."
Depending on the outcome of the fated battle, different things happen within the OoT3D. If OoT3D falls in battle to OoT3D, the OoT3D King steals the OoT3D and , transforming into the OoT3D and forcing the OoT3D to seal him within the OoT3D. An OoT3D eventually breaks out over entrance to the OoT3D as people find their way into the OoT3D only to be transformed into OoT3D by the OoT3D inside. The OoT3D orders for the OoT3D to be sealed once more, only for an army of OoT3D under the command of OoT3D to spring from the and wage war against OoT3D. At the great cost of many lives, the OoT3D seal the OoT3D. This order of events eventually leads to the decline of OoT3D and the events of ALttP.

The Door of Time possibly made another appearance in Twilight Princess. At the entrance to the ruined temple, there is a single set of stone doors. When translated from ancient Hylian, the inscription upon them reads "Time Door." The mystical portal contained within these doors became the means through which the Link of Twilight Princess was able to travel back in time to visit the Temple of Time fully intact, as it stood in the days of his forbearer.
In another reality in the OoT3D, OoT3D succeeds against OoT3D and the OoT3D seal him away in a void within the OoT3D. OoT3D then uses the OoT3D to return OoT3D to his own time and places the OoT3D back into its , sealing the OoT3D once more. This order of events leads to the Series and the events of TWW.

Historical Appearances
Having returned to his own time in the OoT3D, OoT3D awakens in the OoT3D to a time before the OoT3D is drawn from its . OoT3D meets with OoT3D in this new OoT3D to warn her of OoT3D's plan. Fearing this possible future, OoT3D sends OoT3D away with the OoT3D so that the OoT3D can never be opened. This order of events leads to the events of MM and eventually the OoT3D after the OoT3D.

The original, ancient Temple of Time that existed during the Era of the Goddess Hylia and the Era of the Sky appears in the northwestern section of the Lanayru Desert in the Lanayru Province. It is accessible after completing the Lanayru Mining Facility dungeon. When Link first arrives at this temple, he finds Zelda and Impa at the Gate of Time. Ghirahim then bursts in on the brief reunion, but is held at bay by Impa while Zelda throws the Goddess's Harp to Link and tells him that he will need it. Zelda and Impa escape through the gate and Impa uses a magical explosive to permanently destroy it, preventing Ghirahim from pursuing them.

This temple differs from its successor because it is an open air courtyard and is located in the desert. At the western edge of this temple is a monumental stone of the Hylian Crest and a Gate of Time.
The OoT3D was constructed much like a cathedral. In the Era of Twilight, the Temple of Time has fallen into decay, becoming a complex of unidentifiable ruins still located in the Faron Woods, in an area deep within the Sacred Grove. The only thing that remains in place is the Pedestal of Time, where the Master Sword rests.

When Link briefly thrusts the Master Sword into the Pedestal of Time in the Sacred Grove, a statue that was blocking a nearby door is immediately removed. Entering through this door takes the hero an undisclosed amount of time into the past and allows him to explore the temple before it fell into deep ruin.

In the past, the Temple of Time is virtually identical to how it appears during the events of Ocarina of Time, with the exception of the missing Spiritual Stones altar. When the Master Sword is thrust into its pedestal, a blue staircase appears that can be used to reach the back window of the room, which grants access a previously hidden part of the temple that appears to be entirely separate from the kingdom of Hyrule itself. This new section of the temple acts as a dungeon from where Link can find the Dominion Rod and a missing piece of the fractured Mirror of Twilight. By stepping back through the temple's main entrance, Link is taken back to the present.

In BotW, the Temple of Time is located in the Great Plateau in Central Hyrule, close to the game's starting location. The temple resembles its appearance in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, but is larger and in an extremely dilapidated state, with missing and broken windows, crumbling rooftop, and collapsed walls. Rubble is strewn around the temple's interior, and the structure appears to have been reclaimed by nature as grass can be seen growing inside, and ivy creeping up the walls. There is a statue of Hylia inside that looks like a smaller version of the Statue of the Goddess. Link is able to scale the temple structure, with a ladder on one side providing access to the roof of the building. A Traveller's Bow can be found inside a chest in a small side-chamber located near the temple's entrance.
A BotW can be found in a small pool between the lowest buildings. It can be searched for BotW. The Light Temple, located in the Sacred Realm, is unable to be fully explored in Ocarina of Time, though it is mentioned by Rauru and visited by the Hero of Time each time he frees one of the Seven Sages, in which he only visits the Chamber of Sages. The Temple of Time in Twilight Princess contains an entire dungeon beyond the window in the Chamber of the Master Sword, seemingly leading to a place completely separate from Hyrule. ===Renovation===
BotW
In TWW, the Temple of Time is not shown, and the Master Sword sits in a chamber in the basement of Hyrule Castle. Because only a successor of the Hero of Time is supposed to be able to draw (and so move) the sword, and no known successor appeared prior to Hyrule's flooding, it would seem that the sword was unmoved between the events of OoT and Wind Waker. In light of this, and the fact that the original Hyrule Castle was destroyed in the Adult Timeline, it is plausible that a new Hyrule Castle was built directly over the Temple of Time some time after Ganondorf's defeat, with its basement encompassing the sword's chamber. This is supported by the castle's close proximity to Ganon's Tower, which itself is likely a rebuilt version of the castle built over the original Hyrule Castle; in Ocarina of Time, the Temple of Time is fairly close to the castle.

Similarly, in ALttP, Hyrule Castle eventually becomes the site linking the Light and Dark worlds, linking directly to the Pyramid of Power. For a multitude of reasons, the latter structure is theorized to be the Temple of Light, and if so, Hyrule Castle would therefore serve the exact purpose the Temple of Time served in Ocarina of Time. This would make it likely that the two structures are really one and the same and that, by virtue of this, Hyrule Castle was built over the Temple of Time in the Downfall Timeline as well.

Relocation
BotW
In OoT, the Temple of Time was located in Castle Town, near Hyrule Castle.  But in TP later in the Child Timeline, the Temple of Time is located much further to the south of Castle and Town, suggesting that one or the other was moved after the events of Ocarina of Time when Link was returned to his Child Timeline.  And considering the relative locations of landmarks in Hyrule, it may be likely Castle and Town did not move north, unless most of Hyrule's other landmarks moved north as well.  This strongly suggests that the Temple of Time was dismantled and rebuilt further south in its remote Sacred Grove location in Faron Woods.  Because this Faron Temple of Time existed during the time of the Hero of Time, this suggests that the relocation may have happened very quickly within the Hero of Time's lifetime.

List Notes

Considering Ganon's deception of the King of Hyrule and destruction of Castle and Town early in the Adult Timeline and Fallen Hero Timeline (before the two timelines branched) and the successful assault against Ganon early in the Child Timeline, the Temple of Time's highly accessible location in Town may have been deemed too vulnerable to future attacks, and its new Sacred Grove location was chosen (at least in part) because it was so remote and hard to reach by humans.  Alternatively, the Temple of Time may have been destroyed early in the Child Timeline, rather than merely having been dismantled.  The Sacred Grove's sacredness may have factored into the relocation decision, as it may have been sacred not because of the relocation of the Temple, but already sacred because it may have been the site of the old Sealed Temple atop the Sealed Grounds in SS.

{{Korok Seeds|game= BotW

And because the Sacred Grove seems to have the same role as the Lost Woods and is apparently home to the same Skull Kid who befriended the Hero of Time, it is furthermore possible that the relocated Temple of Time was built on the site of the old Forest Temple, or not far from it.

Not to be confused with the Temple of Time Ruins.

The Temple of Time is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][3][4][5]

Features and Overview

Ocarina of Time

During the Era of Chaos, a group of powerful sorcerers known as the Dark Interlopers waged a Battle for the Sacred Realm against the people of Hyrule to seize the Triforce.[6][7] To prevent the abuse of the Triforce, the Golden Goddesses sent the Spirits of Light to banish the Dark Interlopers into the Twilight Realm,[7] a sort of parallel world that exists "behind" the Light World.[8] The Sage of Light, Rauru, also decided to hide the Triforce within the Sacred Realm's Temple of Light. As the only entrance to the Temple of Light was through the ruins of the Sealed Temple, Rauru built a new Temple over the ruins to protect the entrance.[9]

The Temple of Time's interior from Ocarina of Time 3D

Inspired by the legends of a hero who wielded the Master Sword and traveled through Time in the distant Sky Era,[10] he chose to borrow the name of the fabled Temple of Time and used the Master Sword to seal the entrance to the Sacred Realm as it could not be touched by evil hands and could only be drawn from the Pedestal of the Master Sword by those deemed worthy.[10] The Master Sword was then sealed behind the Door of Time, which could only be opened with the three Spiritual Stones and the Ocarina of Time.[11] The Kingdom of Hyrule was established by the descendants of the reborn Goddess Hylia to protect the secret of the Triforce's whereabouts, and Hyrule Castle was built close to the Temple of Time in order to keep watch over it.[11]

Centuries later during the Era of the Hero of Time, the Gerudo King Ganondorf learned of the existence of the Sacred Realm and pretended to serve the Royal Family of Hyrule in order to discover its entrance.[12] Princess Zelda began to have ominous dreams warning her of Ganondorf's impending betrayal yet also promising a hero would appear in the form of a boy from the Kokiri Forest.[13][14] When Link appears to her with the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, she recognizes him as the hero from her dreams and tasks him with the responsibility of collecting the Spiritual Stones to keep them out of Ganondorf's hands.[14] However, Ganondorf notices their plan and begins to watch Link.[15]

After Link successfully recovers the remaining two Spiritual Stones, Ganondorf attacks and seizes Hyrule Castle, forcing Princess Zelda to flee with the Ocarina of Time.[16] Link and Princess Zelda encounter each other once more as she is fleeing Hyrule Castle Town, where she throws the Ocarina to him in desperation.[16] Taking the three Spiritual Stones and the Ocarina of Time to the Temple of Time, Link opens the Door of Time and draws the Master Sword from its Pedestal.[16] However, because Link has the body of a child, he is not strong enough to wield the Sword, and so the Master Sword casts Link into a deep sleep to allow his body to grow.[17]

Ganondorf recognizes this as his opportunity to enter the Sacred Realm unopposed and follows Link inside.[17] With Link unable to stop him, Ganondorf lays his hands on the Triforce.[16] However, this unintentionally causes it to split apart because Ganondorf's heart was wicked and imbalanced.[18] The Triforce of Wisdom and Triforce of Courage chose Princess Zelda and Link respectively as their rightful hosts, while only Triforce of Power was left for Ganondorf to claim.[16]

The Temple of Time in the Adult Era from Ocarina of Time 3D

After Link reawakens seven years later, Ganondorf begins to watch him in the hopes that the fugitive Princess Zelda will reveal herself. Princess Zelda disguises herself as a young Sheikah man named Sheik, who meets with Link inside the Temple of Time to help guide him to the various Temples across Hyrule.[17][19] Sheik also teaches Link the "Prelude of Light" in the Temple of Time after he frees the Sage of the Forest from the Forest Temple.

Eventually, Link awakens the remaining members of the Seven Sages and returns to the Temple of Time where Sheik reveals his identity as the itinerant Princess Zelda, the leader of the Seven Sages.[20] She does this to draw Ganondorf into the Sacred Realm where the three wielders of the Triforce would do battle.[20] To help Link in his destined fight against Ganondorf, she gives him the Light Arrows. However, Ganondorf quickly learns of her presence and traps her within a magic crystal, stealing her away to his Castle and beckoning Link to face him.[21]

Depending on the outcome of the fated battle, different things happen within the Temple of Time. If Link falls in battle to Ganondorf, the Gerudo King steals the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom, transforming into the Demon King Ganon and forcing the Seven Sages to seal him within the Sacred Realm.[22] An Imprisoning War eventually breaks out over entrance to the Sacred Realm as people find their way into the Sacred Realm only to be transformed into Monsters by the Darkness inside.[23] The King of Hyrule orders for the Sacred Realm to be sealed once more, only for an army of Monsters under the command of Ganon to spring from the Realm and wage war against Hyrule.[23] At the great cost of many lives, the Seven Sages seal the Sacred Realm.[23] This order of events eventually leads to the decline of Hyrule and the events of A Link to the Past.[23]

In another reality in the Adult Era, Link succeeds against Ganondorf and the Seven Sages seal him away in a void within the Sacred Realm.[24] Princess Zelda then uses the Ocarina of Time to return Link to his own time and places the Master Sword back into its Pedestal, sealing the Door of Time once more.[25] This order of events leads to the Era without a Hero and the events of The Wind Waker.

Having returned to his own time in the Child Era, Link awakens in the Temple of Time to a time before the Master Sword is drawn from its Pedestal.[26] Link meets with Princess Zelda in this new Timeline to warn her of Ganondorf's plan.[26] Fearing this possible future, Princess Zelda sends Link away with the Ocarina of Time so that the Door of Time can never be opened.[26] This order of events leads to the events of Majora's Mask and eventually the Twilight Era after the Failed Execution of Ganondorf.

The Temple of Time was constructed much like a cathedral. Inside, there is a Triforce Warp with the symbol representing Light. Link can Warp to this by playing the "Prelude of Light" on the Ocarina of Time. In Ocarina of Time 3D, a Sheikah Stone meant to guide Link with Visions can be found inside the Temple of Time. Outside the Temple, Link can find four Gossip Stones. If the game is saved while Link is outside of a Dungeon in the Adult Era, he will appear inside the Temple of Time when the game is reloaded.

The Temple of Time at its height of glory

The Temple of Time from the Child Era is eventually abandoned and rots away with time.[27] The grounds where the Temple of Time stood are eventually claimed by nature and become the Sacred Grove. However, the Master Sword remains in its Pedestal, waiting for a hero to claim it. Signs of the civilization from the Era of the Hero of Time remain and inspire adventurers like Rusl to seek them out.[28]

After Zant places a curse on Link by trapping him in his Wolf form with the Shadow Crystal, Princess Zelda reveals the location of the Master Sword which can purge the evil curse. Link travels to the Sacred Grove with Midna on his back to find the Sword. Upon locating the Master Sword, Link touches it and is cleansed of his curse, transforming back into a Human with the Master Sword in hand.

Link eventually returns to the Sacred Grove in search of the Mirror Shard stolen by Zant. The Mirror Shard is located within the Temple of Time in the distant past and in order to find it, Link must plunge the Master Sword back into its Pedestal to remove a statue blocking the Door of Time. Upon doing so and passing through the Door of Time, he is transported to a time in which the Temple of Time stands at its most glorious splendor. By inserting the Master Sword back into its Pedestal, Link is able to enter the Temple of Time proper.

Skyward Sword

The Temple of Time is a large, open-roofed Temple at the Desert Gorge in the Lanayru Desert. It is connected to the Lanayru Mining Facility where Timeshift Stones were processed for the Goddess Hylia. A gigantic stone carving of the Hylian Crest with a Triforce above it sits at the back of the Temple of Time. A device intended for traveling between time periods known as a Gate of Time can be found in front of this Crest, flanked by Loftwing statues.

After purifying herself in the Skyview Spring and Earth Spring, Zelda is taken to the Temple of Time to keep her safe and out of Ghirahim's reach. At some point after her arrival, the entrance to the Temple was destroyed in an explosion,[29] making the Lanayru Mining Facility the only means of accessing the Temple by foot.[30] Before Impa and Zelda can make their escape by passing through the Gate of Time, Ghirahim breaks through the rubble and attacks Impa's barrier. However, Link arrives at this moment and offers his aid, allowing Impa and the Reborn Goddess Hylia a chance to escape to the distant past. Before they leave, Zelda gives Link the Goddess's Harp,[31] a necessary tool to activate the second Gate of Time in the Sealed Temple in the Faron Province.[32] As they escape, Impa leaves behind a magical Bomb to destroy the Gate of Time behind them, preventing Ghirahim from following them. Frustrated by this loss, Ghirahim prepares his retreat, threatening to torture Link the next time they meet.[33]

Two Blue Rupees can be found atop the pillars surrounding the Gate of Time.

Breath of the Wild

The Temple of Time is a large complex near the center of the Great Plateau. It resembles its form from the Era of the Hero of Time, with several alterations. The grounds leading up to the Temple of Time proper host three abbeys placed in a triangular formation, each marked with crests dedicated to one of the Golden Goddesses. According to the Old Man, the Temple of Time was where many sacred ceremonies were held, but it was abandoned after the destruction of Hyrule Kingdom during the second Great Calamity.[34] In the past, it was connected to the Great Plateau's Eastern Abbey by a road on its eastern side, though this road has been destroyed. At the back of the Temple of Time there is a large Goddess Statue surrounded by six smaller Goddess Statues. Link can pray at this Goddess Statue and exchange four Spirit Orbs for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel. To either side of the Goddess Statue are two Tombstones belonging to unknown decedents. On the rear side of the Temple of Time there is a symbol of the Triforce bearing the Crests of Din, Nayru, and Farore.

King Rhoam revealing himself to Link at the Temple of Time

When Link successfully retrieves four Spirit Orbs from the four Ancient Shrines atop the Great Plateau, he is visited by the Old Man.[35] The Old Man tells Link to draw imaginary lines between the Ancient Shrines and to meet him where those lines cross.[36] This instruction guides Link to the tower of the Temple of Time's main building, where the Old Man reveals his true identity as the late King of Hyrule, Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule.[37][38] There, King Rhoam tells Link about the events of the Great Calamity and the destruction of Hyrule Kingdom by Calamity Ganon's hands in spite of their preparations to subvert the prophecy of ruin.[39] He instructs Link to meet with Impa of Kakariko Village to the west in order to gain the power necessary to destroy Ganon.[40] Before fading away, King Rhoam gifts Link the Paraglider, a tool that allows him to safely descend off of the Great Plateau.[41]

A Fallen Guardian can be found in a small pool between the lowest buildings. It can be searched for Ancient Materials. Additionally, Link can use the Cryonis Rune to lift it from the pool and make Ancient Materials drop from its bottom. Another searchable Fallen Guardian can be found in the third building with the Crest of Din. Four more Fallen Guardians can be found around the base of the main building of the Temple.
