The Temple of Light became the resting place of the Triforce during the Era of Chaos.[1][2] It is the only known elemental temple that is not located directly within Hyrule. Instead, it lies in the center of the Sacred Realm.[3] It can be accessed only through the chamber of the Master Sword inside the Temple of Time. By withdrawing the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time, a portal opens to the Sacred Realm, which leads to the Temple of Light.[4]

Features and Overview

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Chamber of Sages

The Temple of Light, unlike all other temples in Ocarina of Time, is not an explorable area. Only one of its rooms is visited: the Chamber of Sages, which is where the Sages meet.

A Link Between Worlds

Main article: Chamber of Sages

Link visits the Chamber of Sages after rescuing each of the seven Sages from the Paintings that Yuga used to trap them. Once all seven Sages are present, they reveal the Triforce of Courage to Link and create a staircase inside the chamber so that he can reach it. The Sages remain in the Chamber of Sages until the Triforce is returned to Hyrule.

The platforms the Sages stand upon spell "courage" in Hylian.

Trivia

  • Assuming the Chamber of Sages in A Link Between Worlds is the same one seen in Ocarina of Time, this marks the only confirmed time Link can ever explore the Temple of Light in any capacity, albeit in a very limited manner when climbing the magical staircase to receive the Triforce of Courage.
  • The Temple of Time dungeon in Twilight Princess is said to be adorned with the symbol of the Temple of Light, which is also found on the Light Medallion.[5] Whether this implies the Temple of Time dungeon as seen in Twilight Princess is the Temple of Light is unknown (see below).
  • A long-standing myth among fans is that a playable Light Temple was cut from the early development of Ocarina of Time, which would have involved Link finding the full Triforce; its assets were then recycled for the Spirit Temple, specifically those involving sunlight and mirror puzzles. Supporting this myth were screenshots of Link recovering the Triforce from a chest in a temple that appeared to be in the sky, similar to depictions of the Sacred Realm. However, within data recovered from an older developmental build of Ocarina of Time, Rauru makes no mention of a "Temple of Light," and some text refers to the Temple of Time as the "Hylia Cathedral" instead.[6] Only the Prelude of Light allows one to transport inside.[7] This implies that even in development, the Temple of Time always thematically served as the "Light Temple" of the game, and was never intended to be a fully implemented dungeon with a boss and dungeon item, at least until Twilight Princess. The images of the Triforce in a "sky temple" are actually from an early trailer depicting what appears to be a test recreation of Level 1 from the original The Legend of Zelda, where the "sky" is actually a pool of water.[8]
