The Death Mountain Foothills are the first Stage of Death Mountain in Four Swords Adventures.[1]
Features and Overview
The Death Mountain Foothills are the Enemy-infested base of Death Mountain in northern Hyrule.[2] The visible Enemies come out in droves to attack the Links. An Old-Timer living in the Foothills has built a fire-proof Moving House in the area that the Links can use as a weapon against the onslaught of Deadrocks. One of the Old Men in the area gives advice on getting through the enchanted area known as Hebra's Hill. The area resembles Spectacle Rock of previous titles.
Once the Links arrive in the Foothills, they are greeted by the Yellow Maiden in her Fairy form. She explains to them where they are and urges them to head toward Death Mountain's peak.[2] Posted at the lowest area of the Foothills is a Sign warning Soldiers to report any sightings of the Links immediately.[3] A Cave is hidden under a large Rock nearby. It contains a small blue Force Gem and a small red Force Gem, both of which can be accessed by jumping down onto them off ledges. Both of the Force Gems are behind Blocks. A large Rock above and to the right of this Cave hides a big green Force Gem beneath it.
A forest containing two Houses can be found to the north, patrolled by Bow Soldiers with some hiding in the Grass. A fence blocks off the path north until the Soldiers are all killed. A big purple Force Gem also appears when the Soldiers are slain. The House on the left side contains four Bows and four Jars, whereas the House on the right contains four Boomerangs and four Jars.
Up from the forest is a river with a bridge crossing it. 10 small blue and 4 big red Force Gems float in between each side of the river. They can be picked up with Boomerangs. Above here is an open area with two Shadow Links standing on a ridge, each wielding a Fire Rod, who set the Grass in front of them on Fire. A Bomb Flower can be found on the right on the ground among some Grass, and another can be found on the ridge near where the left Shadow Link stands. The walls can be blown up on both sides of the ridge with the Bomb Flowers to reveal entrances to a Cave full of Holes.
The right entrance leads to a path with two Jars and a Star Tile hidden under the top Jar on it. At the end of the path sits a single Bow. Standing on the Star Tile causes a row of Blocks obstructing a set of four Eye Switches to disappear. The left entrance leads onto a path providing the Links a place to shoot the Eye Switches from. Once the Switches are shot, several tiles appear, connecting both sides and allowing the Links to exit to the north.
Outside the exit to the Cave is an area filled with Buzz Blobs. A tuft of Grass covers a Hole leading down into a Cave. Four Foot Switches can be found beneath four Jars at the bottom of the cave, triggering tiles to appear and grant the Links access to a pair of Treasure Chests. Outside of the Cave on the top left of the area, a Ladder leads up to a steep part of the Foothills with a tall Ladder in it. This Ladder brings the Links up to a high spot mostly blocked off by a big Rock with an Old Man on a ledge below. The Old Man informs the Links that near the Hinoxes is a location called Hebra's Hill, said by the local people to curse whoever enters it to be lost forever.[4] He warns them that they must focus if they want to reach the peak.[5] They can leap off the ledge next to him to land either on the right side of some fences in the Buzz Blob-infested area or next to a large Rock in between the fences containing a big purple Force Gem.
Past the fences is a maze of Rocks, more fences, and Deadrocks. On a lowered area lies the entrance to a Cave with its contents blocked by Moles.
Once the Links get past it, they enter a flat plain containing the Moving House. The front door of the House can be accessed by cutting away some Grass. Once they enter the Moving House, they are greeted by the Old-Timer in Moving House, who is celebrating his success.[6] He explains that the House is completely fireproof and made out of a special type of Wood that is tough but still light and encourages them to try moving it around.[7] He notes that it does become too heavy when Furnitures is placed inside, however, before admitting that he likes the House's empty look.[8] When pushed or pulled, its flamethrowers activate in the direction the Links are facing in, destroying Deadrocks and burning the Grass around them.
Once all the Deadrocks have been killed, four Magic Hammers appear. Returning to the Cave next to the maze, the Moles can be squashed, allowing the Links to access a Jar with a Force Fairy inside and a Treasure Chest. A set of four Stakes north of the maze can also be pressed down with the Magic Hammers to allow them to travel toward the peak.
